Since I am tearing it down, is a base gasket delete a good idea on this saw? Or should I replace that gasket as well?
If you are still planning on selling the saw once you get it sorted out, I would replace the base gasket. Increasing the compression may not be desired by the future owner, and more strain on hard to find recoil parts is another reason. IMO.

Kinda what I was thinking. It already pulls 160 psi. With no decomp button. Already feels like a good pull.

Pawpaw you might be the only voice of reason on this site!

For further practice while I wait I will fully disassemble and rebuild a 55 Rancher. It needs it anyway and I have all the parts I need.
I've got a box full of 55's and associated parts I need to get back to one of these days. They don't sell well around here so I don't have much incentive to tend to them. The last one I think I had on the market about a year before someone finally wanted it. (I used it during that time). Got $175 for it with a nice bar/chain. It looked good too. Around here, if it doesn't say Stihl on it, no one is interested. They're a pretty good saw for the money. I also have a Husky 350 in a box, a 450 and a 460. The 460 I had running but it needed a couple items and I don't have a good parts source so never finished it. If it was a Stihl 460 that would be a different story.

The good thing about this 55 is I only have maybe $50 in it, parts and all. It's a good one to learn on. I started with cheap plastic Poulans and Homelites now moving on to some better quality husqvarnas. After a few of these I will be more comfortable tackling the higher end saws without fear of screwing them up. I have a 340 and a 350 to do after this one while I start the disassembly of the 285CD.

I'm not so certain if WD 40 will work for leaks or not .It did when they used propane for a propellant but they might use something else these days
Having said that usually when a saw revs like that it's an air leak some place in the intake tract between the carb and the block .On a Stihl it was normally the boot .Husqvarna ,I'm not sure how they are put together .
