There's a worn looking Alpina 120 on the Bay at the moment. Wondering if anybody has ported one or done any mods on them. Some old threads indicate they aren't real strong stock.

Parts are hard to come by for any of the Alpina saws here in the states. Make sure it has an air filter or you will be fabbing one up.

It's been a long time but the one i ran was a torque monster not high reving like a modern saw but impressive also one of the best looking saws ever imho.

Out of all the big muscle saws i have and have ran i would
say the Alpina 120 is the weakest of all. I don't know if anyone
has ever ported one but it would be nice to know if any gains
could be had.

Hopefully somebody here will pick it up and make a runner out of it. Looks like a fun project or a neat doorstop. So Lee if the Alpina is on the bottom, what's on top of your list? Is that new Echo the real deal?

I've owned several 120s and have two currently- My theory with them is that the intake tract is the big bottle neck. They have the funkiest reed block which not only restricts flow but makes a 90-degree turn into the crankcase. The port timing is also low, so that the motor makes peak power at low RPM.

I don't really have one thats on the top of my list. Most of the big saws like
084, 3120, 166, Mac 797, SP125, Homelite 2100, Echo 1201 all shine in there
own way. I have always had a weak spot for the 166's and have always liked
the Mac's as well. The Echo was one hell of a surprize. It is right up there with
the big dogs and can hold it's own.

Yes he is. Been around him a few times. Even stayed at his place in Pa. for
a weekend. Very generous person. Good people in my book.
