im with stump you have a weak clutch spring or worn out drum
My first thoughts too.
New clutch spring and new bearing before I got confused and asked you guys.
Doubt it's the drum - a spur drum just can't be that old.

Brake band might be bad (out of round), torquing the drum on an angle. Or maybe your new drum bearing isn't good

The only thing I can think of is to somehow replicate the movement and direction of pull of the chain brake with the chain brake off. That Gremlin can't hide forever.

Could the intake rubber boot get lifted when the brake is pressed and leak causing the stall? Just guessing, this is a secret mystery chainsaw 242.

Hmmm. It's an instant stall - something along those lines makes a bit of sense. I made sure no wires were getting pinched/causing a short.

What happens if you fatten up the low side and then trip the brake?

If it's the intake being stretched, it'll still do it with the clutch and drum removed. Take them both off and install the cover and trip the brake.

Same. Tried every variation of tune imagineable.
even having it idling on 3200 rpm it stalls instant? can you flex the saw between the tank and case ( like when ya hit the brake) to see if its the intake air leak. otherwise i would try new seals and maybe crank bearings.

There is too much play somewhere in that clutch drum. So tripping the brake moves it far enough so that it grabs the clutch.

Wrong needle...missing needle....or....how about a worn crankshaft. ...that would do it. If there is too much play in the needle bearing because of a worn shaft that might allow the drum to move eccentrically.
