...The jug is exactly the same in the 024/024S to the best of my knowledge....

New kid here, not trying to pick a fight, just trying to clarify a bit... The jugs are indeed different between the 024 and 024S. The IPL lists the following:

024 - 1121-120-1200
024S - 1121-120-1201

So, while it would not be the most economical solution, could one "simply" swap crank, jug and piston to build an 026 out of an 024?

(and should I have my mouth washed out with soap simply for suggesting such a thing?)

Great info and research.

I'll be seeing how an 026 jug sits on an 024 case soon enough.

I got a good set of 024 cases with a bad crankshaft. You guys are making me think about looking around for a 026 crankshaft and top end.

I hope that doesn't start happening!

Of course my wife would like my breath smelling fresh from all the soap I'd be eating..........

Try it and it could work
I think the throw angle of the 026 crank in an 024 case is off though.
Let us know if it works.

Yes, except for the fact that (as stated earlier) the 026 and 024 cases are the same. So as long as you have a long crank (026/024S) and a "long" cylinder (026/024S) all should be fine.

I happen to have an 024 on my bench at the moment and the man in blue is on his way with an 024S. So I think some measuring will be in order - just to satisfy my curiosity. Truthfully, my only interest in this is academic, as around my house we simply jump from 357 Magnum straight to the .475 bores...

Why piddle with incremental gains???

Welp, on a side note...when you guys decide to make 1 saw out of 2, I'll take the uglier left over tank handle if you'll part with it reasonably. Previous owner failed to seal this one with 2 or 3 tube of jb weld

If the case # is the same, would make sense that the cylinder is either short (024) or long (024S & 026).

I know when Dr Al converted my 024S to an 026 we also upgraded the flywheel to an 026, a lot more cooling action from that one.

Likely you could cut the bottom of a 026 jug and put it on an 024, but don't know how the port timing would come out. You may also need to cut that piston dome.

There were 2 different cases for both models, both the same part #'s were available for each model saw. There's a 2001 reference in there for both models as well. Maybe they switched stroke about that time? My reference doesn't show the 24s, the bore/stroke for either 024 model, nor that there even was a bore/stroke change

Your point is well taken. But, getting the most power out of a small package at the same weight is appealing to some. Not so different from a 38 S&W vs. a .357.

This is great stuff. I prefaced my statements with "I believe"-etc because I was making assumptions. I tried to make that clear for the point of not being misleading.

I'm interested in this from a mechanical perspective mostly. A 30mm vs 32mm stroke should result in timing differences. If I'm correct in my thinking, the 30mm stroke should result in a lower exhaust roof in degrees at the same physical height-again, could be wrong.

As Mike said, the flywheels are indeed different. I'm not sure if the coil mounts/magnet placement are exactly the same or not. The 024's seem to have a bit more built in advance than the 026's to me. Again, this is seat of the pants feel and sound, I've never timed it.

IMHO, any upgrade to 026 should be accompanied by the better flywheel. Making the top cover fit requires cutting/milling the 2 rear fins down.

A question ,just for curiosity .In the picture it showed an 024 piston with a hemi dome .The only other Stihl I've seen that on was an 038Av It has an offset chamber as well .Is the chamber off set on the 024?

I've got an 024 .All I did to it was rebuilt the carb and gut the muffler so I have no idea what the innards look like .
