What is everyone's opinion on the values of Stihl 024 and 034 saws. Somebody wants to trade me these. 024 runs great, 034 runs but not great. He's valuing them at $250 for the 024 and $200 for the 034.

In my area, those area basically worthless if you want to sell them locally. That 034 looks whipped. Anyone who could use a 024, already has a ms180 that they think cuts like a 500. If they run u might eventually get 100 if you wait long enough.

If you think a 024 compares to a 018/180 then......ok....

I think he was talking about the local folks that think they are all that and a bag of chips with their 180 and their attempt to cut down the forest with it. I had a guy that came into the store all dressed up like a lumberjack (all new clothes, no dirt yet), when he stated he needed a chainsaw and what he was going to use it for, I recommended starting with a MS 391 and higher, he latched onto a MS 171 and didn't let go. I figured it would not be long before I saw him back in the store for a bigger saw.

The problems fellows on here don't have. We're all trying to convince SO that we need 3 sizes bigger than we actually do. And then we go and have it ported.

Those are the folks that should not own a saw.

The 170/180 has it's place but is nothing like a 024/026. I am not really sure what the consumer saw model was that was being sold at the same time as the 024. We had a dealer here that started in the mid- late 1950's. He started in a motorcycle shop and then opened his own shop selling saws but his passion was bicycles. He messed with karts also. He sold Lombard and a few others then went to selling Stihl. He was a growly ole guy but would help anyone, that is why he and I got along. He had no use for the Stihl saws that were a *b-wordh to work on and were not cost effective to fix. He refused to sell different saw models and only sold a few of the trimmer models. His policy was that he was not going to sell something that he did not want to service. I remember the 019 was a saw that he fought with Stihl about. He absolutely refused to sell it. It was not long after he told Stihl to come get all their sheet and never come back.

I agree, many are those fleeing California that want their own piece of the mountain, but don't want to mess up their manicure too. I think soft hands have an easier time gripping smaller saws...
