Are you by chance using "Snap Gauges?", & reading them with a Caliper?

I'm using mulewright terms, obviously.

Those "T" gauges are often affectionately referred to as Snap Gauges.

I've got a cheap set for doing dirty, close enough work, a good set for doing better, & a inside Micrometer for when it's got to be less than 1/2 a Dall hair.

You know them 1/2 Dall hairs are hard to duplicate.

You can do good work with snap gauges, but read them with a micrometer not the calipers. Even when using and inside micrometer I'll check it with my outside mic that I used to measure whatever it is I'm sticking in the hole. Keeps everything honest in case something is out of calibration. Sorry things went south on you.

That's kind of like measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe.
