Well the guy ended up having a slight change of heart and brought me the freaking case and crank.... No rear handle/ fuel tank or the carburetor..... Ughhhh. He isn't making this easy.... I'd like to be able to test the freaking thing and seat the rings.... . This is where my frustration comes from. If the guy won't listen to the advice I've repeatedly given him then it's on him....
Sometimes customers have to learn that their dumb decisions have consequences. These days that’s dicey with the already very loud minority being infinitely amplified by the internet and lies carrying the weight of truth more often than not.

You can always decline. It can take years to build a good reputation but it only takes one time to destroy it. Bad news always travels faster than good news Refusing to do 1 job is better than never getting another
I’ll second this. I have declined more than a few jobs because the potential customer wouldn’t give me what I needed to do the job right.

Ive been self employeed for 15 years now, when I consider taking on a new customer I am interviewing them probably more than they are me, if I get even a single red flag I just tell them I am too busy and somebody else would be better suited to handle their issues.

Why should I care. He came to me wanting it done. I explained everything to him yet he didn't want to listen. I have given him opportunity to change his mind. I'm not going to turn him away. Ive got empty pockets and a empty stomach. Plus I'm far from being a professional. My prices are low as it is. Gotta start somewhere.

Awesome attitude

Okay the guy finally gave me what was needed. I know my attitude about it was *s-word. I am sorry. that's not seriously how I treat my customers. I mean I about bought another saw same model to use as a testing plate form Another prime example but also insane thing I have done for one of my customers. Some of you might recall the stupid "warthog tusk" muffler I did on a 372 xtorq. That saw was originally mine. When I met the current owner he had me clean and rebuild the carbs on a 250 and a 270. When I returned those saws, I mentioned that I port them as well as repairs . The guy said oh okay here's my ms260 pro. During the period I had his saw. I had suffered from a heat stroke which delayed me finishing the 260. For the extra time it took me I gifted him a OEM 372 xtorq. Yes I know who ever is reading this right now is probably thinking dude you had a medical emergency. I know MOST people would understand the situation. I ended up having the 260 a week longer then planned.

My anger and lack of caring with this thread steamed from hunger which was brought on me because of my own failure. I had a surprise $600 legal bill that could have resulted in jail. This was do something when I was still into drugs. This doesn't excuse me for the way I acted towards this guy.

Heat stroke is the best. Just work until the words coming out of your mouth no longer make sense, then drink some water and sit in the shade.

All the tickets I got when I was younger were "surprises". Last speeding ticket I had years ago the cop gave me a court date on my birthday, I didn't think it was a nice surprise present. I had already graduated to just paying the ticket instead of sitting in the room of sadness. It's no fun being told your dumb, when you know your dumb, just for half off the ticket. When I went to pay it the clerk said "Its been more than 5 years since your last ticket, would you like to pay $120". I told her that if she wanted less money I had no objection. I didn't even have to suffer for the half off.

Being tested by the man is about the only thing I hate more than working for dumb people. Both suck. Good luck with your port job and as others said sometimes saying no and giving up on a job/customer is the only way to win.
