Lay them on their side and lightly tap the washer down with a hammer. Creates enough clearance that the eclip pops right off. They get crud built up behind the clutch drum and it holds it out

Yep, when string or weeds are wrapped up behind the washer, that’s when they won’t come off.

Just had that happen to me a few weeks ago when i was fixing carb issues on my old 020ave, apparently i didnt get the nut on the clutch tight enough, gave it a few piss revs and the whole clutch spun right off the crank on decel, and ran to the parking lot next door to the shop

Thankfully i was able to find all the pieces...

I’ve learned the hard way that saws aren’t meant to be run without the bar and chain, which helps the engine decelerate more smoothly and prevents the clutch from spinning itself off.

Isn’t it funny how you can try to get that e-clip off the same way for 15 minutes and then all of a sudden it comes off even though you been doing the same thing ? I've found certain racial and ethnic slurs mixed in the right combination make it happen. But it depends on the weather which groups of people you have to insult in the right sequence.

On saws with wrap handles that have that washer I can't believe the Human Rights Campaign, the NAACP, the ACLU and the head of every other pusssy organization hasn't called for my execution.....all for trying to get an e-clip out of a washer.

Exactly! And this one has a wrap! I’m just going to take the advice of the certified Stihl tech…..destroy it and put a new one on! Screw greasing needle bearings and such! Run it till melts or the rim sprocket is trash!

Then why is it so aggravating on saws that haven't even been used yet ? I changed the rim on a 661 from a 7 to an 8 that hadn't even been started other than the dealer because the guy wanted to run a 20 on it to buck logs as fast as reasonably possible.

Curious if anyone has tried modifying a set of pliers in a similar fashion to those for roller chain master link pliers with one jaw shorter than the other? I just received 2 new rim sprockets yesterday for the 500i and 500i R and this thread happened to pop up coincidence for pending swearing to come.

taking a slight turn in direction anyone have preference on grease for the bearing? multi purpose vs wheel bearing grease vs? I generally just use whatever I find first.

I tried c clip pliers used for transmission shafts. It helped, but still couldn’t get it off. Went to get another screwdriver and bending the Stihl orange handle junk and it popped right off.

Patience Grasshopper- I hacked up a long handle screwdriver on my bench grinder that works just tits after throwing a few carb screwdrivers I never found.

I have a theory that doesn't really make cents about why some are more aggravating than others..

For the newer milled style washer, best thing i have found for popping them off is a stihl carb screwdriver... get it in one of the "slots" in the clip, pry up against the crank, and rotate the screwdriver to walk it up out of the groove in the washer, and off the crank

Tried that, over and over and over again. Ultimately, that what worked with a better screwdriver but this one was a MF’r.

I found a YouTube video with a modified screwdriver. I’m going to try that next time!

Same. This was brand new! Putting an 8 on it to run a 20” for some saw training. We don’t have enough “smaller” saws for all our guys to use. I’m going to use this one and get it broken in. Didn’t want to lug a 24 or 28 around all day.

Maybe the oiler drive wire was pushing the drum out against the washer?

Could be - I've noticed on the saws that have this washer that the looser the clip is the harder it is to get out of the washer. Why ? Got me.

Perhaps BBR had a hand in its design so people would not swap out new sprockets and run short bars.

The two new 500i that I did was to put 8 pin sprockets to run 20-24" bars.
