I went to change rim sprockets and check/grease my bearing on my 500i. It has a different style retaining washer than my other saws. I fought with it for 15 minutes before I got it off. I have NEVER fought one so bad. What’s the trick?

Basically…you did it, lol
After doing the same thing I have either modified the new style washers or swapped them out for the old style. 40+ yrs of cutting wood with Stihl saws one never had a clip just fly off. And, I think I’ve had exactly 1 break in that time.

Well, I went to the dealer to get some more spare parts and a few e clips and asked him. He told me he fights with them just the same and swaps to the old style as well. Told him to throw a few of those in as well! I was going to give them a shot.

Patience - sometimes they pop off easy, sometimes I use every swear word and racial term I can come up with and throw my screwdriver.
That’s exactly what happened. I walked off to find something else to try and pry it off and it popped right off. The damage was already done though, lol. I told it to GFY!

Isn’t it funny how you can try to get that e-clip off the same way for 15 minutes and then all of a sudden it comes off even though you been doing the same thing ? I've found certain racial and ethnic slurs mixed in the right combination make it happen. But it depends on the weather which groups of people you have to insult in the right sequence.

On saws with wrap handles that have that washer I can't believe the Human Rights Campaign, the NAACP, the ACLU and the head of every other pusssy organization hasn't called for my execution.....all for trying to get an e-clip out of a washer.

Curious if anyone has tried modifying a set of pliers in a similar fashion to those for roller chain master link pliers with one jaw shorter than the other? I just received 2 new rim sprockets yesterday for the 500i and 500i R and this thread happened to pop up coincidence for pending swearing to come.

taking a slight turn in direction anyone have preference on grease for the bearing? multi purpose vs wheel bearing grease vs? I generally just use whatever I find first.

Can't say about an 500i but on my MS250 I replaced the e-clip with an O-ring.
It is holding up just fine and it is dead simple.

Not that I'm aware of, but some of these guys are pretty crafty.

Echo makes a red armor grease that I use for the needle bearing.

For the newer milled style washer, best thing i have found for popping them off is a stihl carb screwdriver... get it in one of the "slots" in the clip, pry up against the crank, and rotate the screwdriver to walk it up out of the groove in the washer, and off the crank

Dremel with cut-off wheel to the clip; throw the machined washer, and clip parts, away. Replace with old style. Quick, satisfying, no swearing 😃
Right up til ypu are noodling that one big log, and the clip, washer, and driver go flying into the abyss that is the noodle/sawdust pile....

Was working on a 262 w/o clutch cover and revved it up and clutch came off and went 2 blocks down the street before coming to rest

Just had that happen to me a few weeks ago when i was fixing carb issues on my old 020ave, apparently i didnt get the nut on the clutch tight enough, gave it a few piss revs and the whole clutch spun right off the crank on decel, and ran to the parking lot next door to the shop 🤣🤣🤣

Thankfully i was able to find all the pieces...

Did not use a carb screwdriver but did use a narrow screwdriver that fit the width of the clip slot and pried it off no fuss not sure if it was luck worked 2 in a row  if I get a 3rd my outcome may be different.🤔
