I went all psycho on mine and chopped to top cover to run the WCS filter unrestricted. I do feel like it made a difference in oomph, but I'm tired of the open filter. And the WCS filter really needs a pre filter. I clean it pretty regularly, and I always find a little bit of fines around the edge of the flange on the carb.
K&N used to make a filter that would fit the flange, but it's NLA. And the other downside to the open filter is getting caught in the rain.

@Loony661

I think Andy is running one but it could be on a different date he has.
I am running one. I received one about a month ago, but due to poor weather and a halt to logging, I have very limited time with it.

I will say this though: after installing it on my 462c - just the throttle response alone has increased a very noticeable amount. The increased area of filtration is going to be a benefit I didn’t know was needed on these 462’s. I’ll be testing it more in the near future. So far, I’m impressed.

You do have to cut the cover, but that didn’t bother me any. The instructions were clear and reference pictures were accurate. And the provided template also worked well.

There is plenty of firewood at the farm that needs cutting if you want to test it out.

I noticed the throttle response when I went to the exposed filter on my 462. It was already quick, but it is better with more air coming into it. I was hoping I wouldn't lose that with the max flow. Sounds like it's going to be alright.

I may end up needing another top cover for mine to clean up the holes that are in it currently. If you get time, would you mind posting a Pic of the right side of the saw ?

Here ya go:

Observation: I just took this now, and as you can see, this is a non-Mtron cover on my Mtron saw. Local dealership ordered the wrong one after broke the original. Aside from the carb adjustment holes, all else is the same.

It looks like that may actually clean up the holes I put in mine. May end up with a little half moon out of it on that bottom corner. We shall see. Thanks for the pic. 20260324_200307.jpg

Anytime!

And I agree - you’ll likely just have a little missing towards the bottom. No biggie!

If you look close enough at my original post with pictures, you’ll notice my cover is missing the bottom corner as well… trees are hard.

Currently running the WCS filter. I never liked smashing that filter under the cover. I'd run stock before I did that. It was night and day after cutting the cover. Sounds like the max flow gives that benefit while still keeping the filter covered, and according to max flow, it still maintains the air circulation through the air box as stihl designed it. Somewhat.

And the WCS filter lets too much fines through. I always find trash around the edges of the flange under the filter when I clean it.

The MaxFlow increases the filter surface area, which is a huge benefit. Longer run times between cleanings, and also more available air at any given time. Plus MaxFlow has a proven track record of not allowing fines to pass through.

Loony661, You are an early adopter of our MaxFlow MF462 Pro-Series High‑Flow Filter Kit and I'm glad to see it here. This kit is a complete redesign of the intake system to include the patented MaxFlow design architecture utilizing a foam element over a fully sealed support cage. It has a unique M-Tronic compatible mount and a user friendly rear entry rain cover with a screw style lock, just like all professional Stihl saws have. With a massive filter, it delivers a huge airflow bump for longer cleaning intervals. Even more than the cleaning interval, the free flowing intake allows the M-Tronic to "see" clean air and adjust for maximum power from the first to the last cut.
Highlights: 120 CFM (oiled) airflow (stock HD2 is 65 CFM)
Up to 6× or longer cleaning intervals
Full‑thickness foam element holds more oil for extra dust holding without reducing CFM
Low cost, no glued seam replacement filter elements are Made in Oregon, USA
Not just a filter replacement, it is a complete filtration upgrade that is only possible by allowing additional airflow under a custom cover. To get this advantage, you will need to trim the factory shroud, but it is easy to do with the provided template.
It is a great option for anyone cutting in dusty conditions or wanting more consistent performance throughout the day.

Anyone planning to try one?

@Max-Flow Filters

Do these work for standard carb 462’s? I might try one on a ported saw to see if there are any gains.

Never mind, see it in post #8 on Loony's
