I normally prep with a scotchbrite pad. Then heat with a propane torch. You can see the moisture leave the metal. I hit it with the paint will it’s still warm.
Before I painted it I hit it with the heat gun and between coats to speed thing up. Then I baked it for 20 minutes each at 200, then 350 and a final bake at 550.

@Ronie that's a good idea on the scotchbrite. I think Il try that. I've had them come out chalky as well.

On the muffler there's a gap between it and the case, I've seen where others have made a bracket but I thought it would be easier to drill out a couple of nuts and braze them on.

I think a lot of saws seem to run good with the Exhaust dropped just a bit from the #s most folks like. It also makes them easier to start (especially if your arm is hurting). Although being down in NC, you may be OK (when it gets cold hear, stuff is harder to start).

We have "gone back in" and dropped the exhaust on three of my saws and found that makes them easier to start and they run stronger. (My 660 big bore, my ported cross 660 [that made 8.6 Hp after dropping the Ex from 100 to 97], and one of my hybrids.

The #s on the 660 ended up (about) squish .020, Ex 97, tr 120 In 82.

But 660s have longer strokes. For 440+460 I think I would go for 100-102 for the Ex, tr 120 and intake 78.

Those are my personal preferences, others do well with other #s. Lots of factors enter in.

What carb are you putting on it?

Likely. If you look at the chart, most 044/440 carbs are different than 460 carbs. Not sure about which ones (or if it is all) but some of the 044 carbs have a smaller venturi than the 460 carbs.

Also, the ported hybrid may prefer a 70 jet (instead of the 68, etc), but jets in 460 carbs can be drilled or changed.

I have HD-11s on both my hybrids, but they are NLA. I recently got some HD-14Cs on ebay, and I think there are some still available, but any 460 carb should work. If using a 440 carb, check the venture against a 460 carb or it may suppress your power a bit.

Not sure if it runs but it's together. Once I get it fired up, I'll post a video of it. I got that 3/4 wrap from HL Supply with some other parts, it was only $22 so I thought I'd give it a try but might be putting the 1/2 wrap back on it once it gets a new cover.

Ronie I like the setup, I was thinking about drilling the spikes also - what size hole did you drill them & what spacing? Great job!

I got to try it out today and I'm happy with the way it runs, lots of torque but but the oiler is very stingy and not up to oiling that 30" bar. I'm pushing on it pretty hard in the video and it does a good job. I wish I had some green wood to try it in but that dry hard oak is all I have. I didn't notice when I was cutting but after watching the video it sounds a little rich still.

Very nice, I love torqey saws!

What carb is on it?

I got a call back from Walbro today (finally). There is no big difference between the HD-14 A,B or C.

He said they may have re designed something, but the venture and jets should all be the same. :-)

Thanks, It has the original 440 carb, to be honest I forgot about comparing it to the 460 carb but the 440 one seems up to the job.
