395XP Shadetree Build

Nothing fancy, just a gasket delete and some time and patience with a dremel.

Picked the saw up for $300 PHO missing top covers, air filter, and clutch.

Tore it halfway down and gave it a bath in the parts washer.



Removed base gasket, timed the saw, and did a muffler mod:




Muffler installed on saw after build completed later on. Would absolutely do it just like this again. Throaty, but not deafening.

Did some research on here and found a post from @Moparmyway which included some numbers from a very strong running build. Decided to follow his lead.

Put the saw back together, helicoiling all the stripped bolt holes along the way.

Also modified the saw to take Husky’s momentary kill switch off of the string trimmers, which is one of my favorite modifications. Convert a ring terminal to a spade and clearance the case behind the switch a little bit.

Hold it til the saw dies, and it automatically reverts to the run position when you let go. It also moves the ridge your thumb grabs over a bit, making it easier to reach when you have an odd grip on the saw.

The only modification I like more is a set of flippy caps off the 572. Those are on their way.

Then it was time to take the 395 with a 42” Stihl mount bar and my 372 out on a job.

Had not seen a photo anywhere of a 395 side by side vs a 372XP or other 70cc saw. Here’s your size comparison.

Nearly forgot the obligatory cookie cut.

It’s spinning Oregon full skip on a 42” fresh out of the box, and the carb still needs it’s tune cleaned up.

Very happy with it’s first pull. This stump was removed roughly two years ago, so it dry red oak.

Okay, first job. Remove a freaking huge cottonwood stump:

Very happy with the saw. It pulls a 42” like it’s angry at the tree, and this thing puts out oil like the Exxon Valdez. I’ve run ported 066/661s and loved them… but this saw absolutely defines what torque is.

Following Kevin’s Lead was a good idea.

The 395 he built me will never leave. It’s like the honey badger of saws. I’ve never even changed the tune on it.

The saw just doesn’t give a rat’s ass what you throw at it. It runs an 8 pin rim on a 36” .404 bar. The saw just doesn’t give up no matter what you do. I bought a 3120 for milling and i am unsure why, the 395 is right there with it with a 36” mill.

I’d imagine that he did some squish band and base cutting than I’m not set up to do. I’ve only ported a few saws so there’d definitely something left on the table.

I ran skip tooth on that 42” but, again, this saw pulled that bar like it was 20 inches long. Absolute torque monster.
