Starter occasionally binds with the rope hanging out. Yanking it sometimes pops it loose, or turning through the starter fins, or loosening the starter screws. Bind between the steel drive hub and the flywheel? Saw is old and beat…

Try #4 trueblue starter rope 4.5 seems to bind in my 395 for some reason.

Check the recoil pulley, it might be splitting in the middle and allowing the rope to double up on itself and bind.

I have had that happen before from running small dia rope on other saws, but I think this is some kind of bind at the flywheel. I’ll check.

Long rope to make sure it reaches the bottom will fix the problem

Weld the flywheel nut and start it with a cordless impact
stihl dealer had a customer bring a saw in for service
he'd modified it as it was too hard to pull.

Check for excessive wear(wobble) on the pulley hub.
Could use a set of new pawls.

Meh, just run them. I've seen them dented 1/8" or more and still work fine.

New starter pulley and it will be good to go!
