I like running them.

Mine was made prior to the crank change. I’m running a new oem top end on this less desirable bottom end with no problems. Mike @t4driller ported it and it’s strong. I used it a lot this past summer. It’s even survived a couple of buddy’s use.

No weird sounds. No weird vibrations.

It would appear my saw is just after the crank change.
It would also appear I have a lot to learn about this series.

Yup the 357 had a few growing pains. But the good news is they are all inexpensive to fix. The big things are disabling & plugging the auto decomp, updating the intake with a metal clamp style and installing an updated kit in your carb ( if it has an HDA 198 or 199 on it).

It appears to me that the auto decomp fails because the barbs on each connection were made too long and dig into the hose until it splits open. It would have been a different story if they had made the barbs shorter or curved.

What’s the theory on it? How does it work?
I’ve never heard of this before today.
Not sure on the mechanics of the valve Dave. The one sure thing is they were problematic and were not installed on later versions. Mine is an 06’ and I’m almost certain it came with a normal manual decomp button. I’ll check later today.

My 357 was built in '05 and had the auto decomp. It never caused me any grief, but I deleted it and installed a manual valve after finding out they were known to be problematic to the extent of losing a top end to it.

I'm bumping this back up because I have one I'm going through right now.
Do these numbers seem legit, or am I reading the wheel wrong? Mine is numbered a bit different than many I've seen used on 2 stroke.

The saw had munched the pto side bearing.
There is a bit of pitting/roughness to the squish area. With the new Meteor piston, squish is at .023". Leave the roughness or sand it out and deal with the extra squish? I don't have the means to cut the base.

Bring that up just like that one day this weekend and I will help you get it right in the sweet spot on the lathe and show you a trick or two along the way. ;)
