I wouldnt use a golf, unless it was the last piston out there available for a saw. Hate them.

I put a golf with cabers in my 254 because at the time that's all that was available.

I've only used Meteor, and OEM. I've had good luck with both.

The most impressive small saw at the CT GTG was a Hooskey 350 with that there 45mm Hyway top end on it.

No chamber work, it was pulling 200 psi with squish adjust by base plate machining. IIRC, passages smoothed and gaskets matched, but no timing change.

Handed my 16k MS260 it's lunch, as well as a bunch of 346's-modded and unmodded.

It was MattyO's.

The point here is that this particular AM jug isn't cheap but can be made to run.

Good post Al.

I've built some great running saws with AM kits.

Now I've had a few disasters too. That has helped me learn what to watch for, and where not to get my stuff.

You gotta pay close attention to the port bevels. Remembering that the bottom of the exhaust port is a tough place to see if it is well beveled, be sure to check it over extra carefully.

Look at the rings real well........and the piston. Some of the cheaper AM kits will suffer a piston failure rate that is too far high.

Seeing how the talk is 346?

Can a 346 NE top end be put on a 346 OE bottom end?

I like to use tecomec stuff when i have to.mainly cylinder kits when i can't find OEM.Meteor pistons when i can't find OEM or originals are too expensive.I'm trying out some tecomec pistons for the 44mm 026's right now hopefully some 036 tecomecs in the near future.

Wondering how things have changed in the last decade. I recently put an OEM slug n jug on a 2153c as a stock build (just an AM muffler on it,) and realized I've got 3 of these saws with nothing on the shelf for parts. Are there any jugs close to an OE cylinder at this point?

I don’t know how well they run out of the box, but I have ported a handful of the Duke’s 346 top ends. They run like a ported OEM top end.

oem for $239

and a 353 for $625. A tad spendy for a new 346xp, but doable.
