If a bar uses 104 dl of 3/8 how many drive links of .404 will I need? 32 inch solid nose bar.

I have to agree with Pincher. Best bet is that this bar is a 32"and takes 105 DL's. A 32" bar that uses .404" pitch chain wants 95 drive links.

I do not recommend using .404" pitch chain with a bar that has a 3/8" pitch nose sprocket. I doubt anyone else does either.

It's a hard nose McCulloch bar so no sprocket just trying to figure out how many DL of .404 to start at. It's going on the 797

Try 95 DLs as Pincher and I recommended. But, not many hard nose bars that long do very well. Heat builds up and smoke start showing up. Make sure the saw's bar oiler is wide open. Good luck!

It takes less work and presets to shorten a chain then it does to lengthen one. I like to err on the long side if I'm guessing.
Ryan, I am lost after reading your reply. OP is talking about increasing the pitch of the chain from 3/8" to .404" and using the same 32" bar, not shortening the chain.o_O

He is talking about spinning a chain for a certain bar. So, he’s suggesting to be a dl long rather than a dl short.

I understand what he's trying to do. I just meant that if you have to guess how many dl long to make a loop from a reel of chain, if you guess too short, it'll take 3 presets in the end. One to make the loop in the first place, and two more to add a link. If you guess too long, it takes two, one the first time, and one to put it back together after you remove a link.

Yep you definitely do not run them like a Sprocket nose that's for sure

And that is the problem.

I don’t know if it’s completely correct but on the 33” hard nose I have for my 075 I set it so I can see a little line of daylight between the bar and chain on bottom side of bar.
