Ok fellas help me out.

Here is the saw.

Here is the bearings and case set I ordered from HL supply.

That being said, I received a pair of 6203 bearings, and a pair of identical seals. Here is the problem.

Why won't this setup fit the 181 when it is listed that it will? Why is this saw different?

The early 181 has a different crank. The later ones interchange.

Yep. VERY early 181 used the 6202 bearing and a 61-272 series seal on the FW side. PTO side is the same as the later saws. Just use a 6202 and a 272xp seal on the FW side.

Only the first 181 IPL (1983 IIRC) shows the smaller bearing and seal. Yours is the first early 181 that I have seen pics of. My181SE has the larger bearing and seal on the FW side.

Can ya post a few pics of your early 181SE crankshaft?

I sure can. Tomorrow.

Can someone please move this to Chainsaws? When I posted, it only allowed builds or chainsaw gtg's under chainsaw.

Thanks.

This is interesting, I have a 181 coming tomorrow that might need seals and bearings too.

You'll know what you have once you pull the flywheel. Measure the diameter of the seal body and compare it to Mike's measurements above.

I suggest you change the seals, oil pump body o-ring, and oiler x-ring no mater what. I always replace them when I go through these saws. Cheap insuance.

That's about the earliest 181 I've ever seen. There was a two-page ad in the December 1982 issue of Chainsaw Age that announced the introduction of the 181. Yours is from that era.

Mike- I can send you the correct bearing and seal for the flywheel side on this- I have tons of 272 seals.

I got the parts now. I have a 359 seal that will work.

Aaron, which is the x-ring here?

Little bugger just to the left of the big o-ring in the pic. Fits over a roll pin sticking out of the underside of the pump body. 501288501.
