was milling boards with my 162 when it got hot on clutch side it seems. it would rev good but under loads it dies out. i pulled muffler off to see piston looks good to my untrained eye. pulled plug to do compression test but can only get one turn on motor then seems to lock up but it turns freely without plug. all thoughts good or bad would be welcomed..thanks

But, is the chain sharp?

Some easy things I'd check.
fuel filter/carb screen
air filter
Flywheel key
clutch springs

If naught, you could have pealed a c-clip out of the wrist pin and sent it through the transfers and now that it's shut off, it's fallen into the bottom end? or top end?
might be worth pulling the top end and having a lookskie.
So it won't turn over at all now but before when the problems started it would start and restart but died under load?

vac/pressure test would be good too if you can't find anything.
good luck, keep us posted.

Pull the muffler, check for piston damage.

I bet next you will be pulling the cylinder.

Yeah, probably.

I just had the same conundrum on a 266…seals only or brgs too. Lot safer to do brgs. Lot more work.

I’d pull the cyl and seals so it can rotate freely and carefully inspect, feel, listen to the bearings.

Might throw a ring in there. I *think* compression might ought to be more like 175psi.

I would think just a caber ring unless the piston is sloppy in the bore.

It was weird I was milling a board saw was idling and revving good but no power when it was working. Then I thought it was hot on clutch side so I shut it off. Took brake bar and chain off then the muffler. Piston looked ok to me so tried compression test. But with pull cord could only get one compression stroke and it would lock but if I waited a few seconds I could get another compression stroke. So without the sparkplug and no compression it would turn fine and not lock up
