I have used rotary converters before. The instructions that came with it states that, ” The manufactured phase is Not to
be used with a magnetic contact switch “. Not sure if it’s the same for an electronic converter.

That I do not know. I mapped out the wiring of the lathe and found a diagram/instructions.
I'll have to go see later.

I think this converters issue has been narrowed down to a faulty switch/relay.

I still haven't messed with the Static Converter... I did finish the tailstock ram/quill as well as the Taper attachment clamp.

For some odd reason I'm not getting notifications when people respond... 🤔

On a fun note, we got that wild hair twitching again... went to the Speedway and got checkers. 2 for 2... might not go back for another 3 or 4 weeks... depends on when that wild hair starts twitching again. 😆

Machined a Go-Nogo Gage for the Chuck adapter (2-3/8"-16tpi) that I'll be machining once this 16" South Bend is up and running. Good ol' 3-wire method for the win.

I'm itching to start machining custom 4340 chainsaw crankshafts on this lathe... might even mill an aluminum rod or two... I have some 6061 and various grades of aircraft aluminum... we shall see.

Talking go no go gauges made me think of one thing. Rifles....... You could chamber barrels on that thing.

My uncle used it for that. He built many competition rifles in the CNY area. My aunt, Anka, shot competitively. I want to say before Pete passed away, he built her a .338 Lapua and she won the competition with a 3/4" grouping @ 500yds.

Something about Germans and shooting. 😏

A so called "static converter " is nothing but a starting device .Use of same only produces about 60 percent power of true or manufactured three phase using a rotary converter .In addition using them does work however in a case of reversing rotation the machine it must be stopped and restarted in reverse rotation .Unlike true three phase you can almost instantly reverse them with a flip of a switch .Such as threading up to the shoulder of a shaft .

That's my understanding.
Use of same only produces about 60 percent power of true or manufactured three phase using a rotary converter.
I've read 60-70% of maximum power is to be expected.
In addition using them does work however in a case of reversing rotation the machine it must be stopped and restarted in reverse rotation.
This lathe, the way it is now, runs just fine when switching from fwd to rev. It's Almost instantaneous in direction change.
Unlike true three phase you can almost instantly reverse them with a flip of a switch. Such as threading up to the shoulder of a shaft .
I don't reverse while threading... I disengage, pull-out, reset and follow the same lead... sometimes i use slant depth other times i use straight depth... I always use the 3 wire method for checking threads... But, to each their own.

Another short fall of a static converter is the fact it shouldn't be used in any application where repeated starting is used because it will over heat the windings .Things like an air compresser for example . Other than that in most applications they do work .
A general rule of thumb with rotaries is they will start up to whatever size the converter is and run up to three times the HP providing the largest motor is within that size .Besides that they are easy to make and three phase used motors are usually inexpensive .

I might go that route if I don't like the VFD. I have a small 3 phase 220 motor, I have to see what the hp is.

We have a Nice Snug fit to the spindle, absolutely no slop in the thread engagement... to finish this up, I need to machine approximately 1/2" from the faces. I want to make the adapter flush with the spindle. In doing so, I'll gain center to center distance and I'll have less rotating mass to help on the starts. I have to drill 6 through-holes then finish them off with counter bores and I'll be able to mount the 3-jaw.

Punched some holes and counter bores into the adapter... the final/truing cuts will be the South Bend.

Turning a Super Secret Part for a Super Secret Project on the 9" South Bend. The finish isn't the greatest but, this lathe can still hold a tight tolerance.
