Yes mine has the slant case so 12mm?
Is this cylinder the same as early 044?
EG port timing.

Also clock for @jacob j.
The earliest 044's were the 10mm wrist pin cranks with the Kolben Schmidt slant fin cylinders then Stihl went over to Mahle. All of the 12mm slant fins are Mahle. The KS cylinders have more compression and guys say they run a bit better.

The 064 and early 066 cases similar. They have an oval plug near the oil fill cap that covers one of the case alignment pins. If you can see a case alignment pin in front of the oil tank, it’s a 650/660 or late 066.

The 064 case has a hole for the Pita oiler tube on the PTO side and M5 jug mount bolts/M5 lower muffler bolts. It also has that swoopy area above the oil cap like the 10mm 044.

The 066 case has M6 jug mount and Lower muffler bolts and the oiler feed passage is integral to the case.

If it's a slant, even the 12mm runs great. You did well. My piston was in much worse condition for 350 and I still snatched it up.
The cylinder still looked nearly new. So a new piston and some porting and I was on my way.

Nice saw OP, looks to be in great shape. Not long ago I had been picking and saving nos early 044 parts to basically build a nos 044. I ended up abandoning that project and sold off everything for it. Still bums me out a little but it is what it is, gotta pay the bills! Besides I still have an 044/046 Arctic that I use regular and that's enough I suppose.

Saw looks to be in great shape. You got a great deal. I thought all the 044s were German made (SN starts with 1). What is your saw's SN?

My 044 is a Red Lever saw, was purchased new by me in 12/92 and SN starts 126. It has a KS P+C. My saw does not have a riveted tag, and it is original. Only the rope/handle has been replaced (once).

I think there was a period when Stihl was using both KS and Mahle. My KS piston has stabilizer wings that the Mahle pistons do not have.

My saw has always been a very good runner, and I think some of the later 044s ran stronger than many of the very early ones.

The earliest ones were black lever (which they went back to) and had the smaller (5mm?) bolts on the recoil.

my 044 has the m4 recoil housing bolts, I notice the ipl shows the previous models have the m4
The serial is 122994652. It is a red lever artic model. it’s got a mahle cylinder
