Slant fins are all identical from what I could see
The earliest 044's were the 10mm wrist pin cranks with the Kolben Schmidt slant fin cylinders then Stihl went over to Mahle. All of the 12mm slant fins are Mahle. The KS cylinders have more compression and guys say they run a bit better.Yes mine has the slant case so 12mm?
Is this cylinder the same as early 044?
EG port timing.
Also clock for @jacob j.
You don’t happen to have any pictures of the difference in 1122 stihl saws. The 660, 066, and 064
The 064 and early 066 cases similar. They have an oval plug near the oil fill cap that covers one of the case alignment pins. If you can see a case alignment pin in front of the oil tank, it’s a 650/660 or late 066.You don’t happen to have any pictures of the difference in 1122 stihl saws. The 660, 066, and 064
Yes but the earliest 10mm wrist pin saws came with the KS cylinder from the factory.View attachment 329593 View attachment 329593 View attachment 329594
I have an 044 with mahle slant fin and my wrist pin is 10mm
Saw looks to be in great shape. You got a great deal. I thought all the 044s were German made (SN starts with 1). What is your saw's SN?
My 044 is a Red Lever saw, was purchased new by me in 12/92 and SN starts 126. It has a KS P+C. My saw does not have a riveted tag, and it is original. Only the rope/handle has been replaced (once).
I think there was a period when Stihl was using both KS and Mahle. My KS piston has stabilizer wings that the Mahle pistons do not have.
My saw has always been a very good runner, and I think some of the later 044s ran stronger than many of the very early ones.
The earliest ones were black lever (which they went back to) and had the smaller (5mm?) bolts on the recoil.
SN 119 would be an early one.
