Funny, as I used to be far more conservative when I was younger. Very much against drugs, etc. I have a much more 'fuggit' attitude now after realizing life is so short. Enjoy it.

This. I stand firm against living my life taking opiods to make it through the day. I concede at some point I will have no choice, but I want to delay that as long as possible.

Treat your body well when you are young. I thought I was invincible. I mean, I had a doctor recently ask me when I broke my arm after he took some x-rays. I vaguely recall having some arm pain in my teens. But I never went to the hospital. When you are young, you will release loads of steroids/cortisol, serotonin, adrenaline, all manner of crap in to your blood at even the hint of trouble or excitement. At older ages - not so much.

Youth is wasted on the young

I'm glad I ran hard when I was young and did all the things I wanted to do and go to the places I wanted to see when I could do it. Payment for that comes as age increases there is no way to get around that. I would much rather have lived well along the way than to not have lived at all, saving myself up to do more nothing.

Yes and no. She's a lurcher; a non pedigreed Greyhound likely mixed with some other breeds for hunting purposes. In Ireland and the UK(and prolly other places in Europe as well), the 'traveling community' use these hounds for betting and hunting(think 'Snatch). They often take very poor care of the hounds that aren't aggressive enough or aren't winning enough, often ditching them in the streets or woods or outright killing them(often by hanging or a shovel as bullets here aren't cheap). I found a fair few discarded lurchers, greyhound, and other dogs about the estates I worked on as a forester in Ireland(and have spent years doing volunteer work for Greyhound and lurcher rescues). That one I found in the woods, digging in to some discarded waste near a roadside. She came right up to me. She now lives with a friend of mine who loves her dearly, and she's easily one of my favorite hounds I've ever rescued. There are literally thousands of these dogs roaming the woods and streets in Ireland. Many are dead before I find them. Some in such a horrific condition, I won't discuss it here.

She looked more like this when we got here(albeit much dirtier and haggard, and slightly thinner):

And she now looks more like this:

Everyone sort of has their niche in life. Mine is forestry and Greyhound/Lurcher rescue(though I will help any dog I see that needs it). I just can't abide dog abuse. We, as Humans, are responsible for them being dogs in the first place, having bred them from Wolves. I feel we are their wardens, and we have a responsibility to them. There is nothing in this life more loyal than a dog. I try to earn that loyalty, instead of take it for granted.

We loved our Misty what a gentle soul. She came from the track and it took her almost 2 years to realize she could have fun.

100% agree. These greys are special. I adopted my two from the local race track; Greyhounds As Pets they take great care to re-home each dog once it’s retired from racing in Florida.

I have read about the lives some greys live, Spain being the example I have researched the most. Pretty bad. They’re “put out” wholesale without a care, I don’t see anyway that can be justified.

Good stuff you’re doing. They just outlawed track racing in Florida, 10k dogs are going to be homeless within two years. The “smart folks” who passed the law didn’t include funding for what to do with 10k dogs.

Looking forward to adopting a few more once I’m able to $$$.

Good on ya, Man.

I spent the last two decades working off and on with the Greyhound rescues, both in the states and Ireland. I have seen a lot of crazy stuff on both ends of the equation, deeply drenched in the mad politics of it all, and have some insane stories. But the hardest thing I've done is I had worked in a Lurcher and Greyhound rescue for 18 months straight full time, living in a trailer next to the kennels, and working a ridiculous amount of hours. I saw their plight from start to finish in a country crawling with Greyhounds. At one point Ireland was the largest breeder of Greyhounds in the world. It is brutal, heart wrenching work. We lost a lot of dogs. We saw a lot of abuse. There were dogs that would stick their noses into the corner and just hunker there, terrified. We had one that would scream if you got near her. Some with their ears removed, or middles of them cut out or drenched in acid, to hide the registered racing tattoos. And so many times we'd arrive at a site where someone reported a Greyhound only to find them dead or dying of their abuse, and then have to bring the police in with the knowledge there was little they could do besides report - it wouldn't even make local news. Crimes here upon hounds rarely ends in prosecution unless mass graves or mass abuse is found and easily documented. Often times they would have brain damage due to being beaten and need to be put down. We've had some beaten so bad with a shovel they couldn't see or walk. I've dragged more than one out of a dumpster nearly dead. And that is just the tip. I'd share more, but it would merely be for my therapy. No one needs or wants to hear it :( I just try and do what I can to help the dogs now. All we can do is try. SOrry for the rant.

Would love to hear what you think of the racing done in the States and it recently starting to get outlawed.

Good move for the dogs long term or end of the greyhound as we know it?

Short term I believe the 10k estimated dogs in Florida will suffer greatly.
Long term I also believe the breed will be watered down.

Never experienced anything bad visiting the track for the two years I researched and spoke with Greyhounds As Pets and kennel owners.

But I wasn’t in deep like yourself.

I always saw it as competition breeds health and the kennels have a lot invested in these dogs so they would keep them healthy and taken care of.

But I may be completely wrong and it’s just as bad as Spain/Ireland and I’m over here living in a stupid bliss. Real information is hard to get. Lot of political groups mixed into this.

Dog racing out now, replaced by casinos.

It really pissed me off when they outlawed racing in Florida and didn’t set a plan on what to do with the dogs as part of the bill and don’t know what to think the long term affects would be.

Man, I really edited this response, and kept it short as I could. I can go on an on.

I hope to god it's not as bad as Ireland. Simply do a search for Greyhound abuse, Greyhound blood bank, etc etc and use your mind to sort out the signal from the noise. It's difficult, I know. Hell, there's folks on the rescue side of things I wouldn't hesitate to throw under the bus myself. But I mainly quietly stay behind the scenes these days.

Is the state of UK Greyhound racing.

We're all working on a solution to the Florida mess. You can help out by donating to the Greyhound rescue of your choice. They are all feverishly working on the problem.
Betting ruins every sport, regardless of what it is. When the things being bet on have virtually no rights, well...

The watering down, as well as the depletion of Greyhounds gets a lot of talk in Greyhound circles. And before this Florida mess, many rescues were starting to import hounds from Europe and Korea and China due to the US track closures. I have a rather stark response, tho. Back when mostly huntsmen and royalty had these sort of hounds, they often considered them a gift from God. Once people found that they could earn money on the backs of these creatures, their suffering began. Greyhounds had it far better when they were relatively rare. But that's easy to say from my seat here in Ireland, where the stream of lurchers is endless.

Here's a vid I made when I was last at GPI Puget Sound in Washington:

https://www.facebook.com/Greyhound-Pets-Inc-90380223427/

And this is how crazy some of the lurchers can look(I also have a vid somewhere of a red lassie collie lurcher):

Plastic clamshell saws
Homeowner grade saws
Ethanol
aftermarket saws/parts

None of the above really bother me except then ethanol. I have a source for e-free fuel but it's kinda a pain getting it due to infrequent days/hours at the place that sells it. Sometimes there open sometimes there not. So you have to call (when there open) to make a appointment to get a gallon or 2 of fuel.

You dealing with Griff? hahahaha

This makes me want to just hug my boys and thank God for bringing them to me! Thank you for all you do!:clap2:
