No clue regarding Stihl saws!
That been said, restore to 10mm.

I may know where a 044 can be had, blew the plug out second time around.
Worth looking into getting my hands on?

Leave it as it is! There are a million 12mm 044/440's out there for hybrids. So that flap is factory on the clutch cover? The 10mm I got had that and I thought someone made it.

Worth grabbing for sure. One of the best saws ever made.

That flap is the "wide discharge" clutch cover before there was an actual wide cover. It's there to protect your fingers when using the wrap handle from the PTO side.

Yours must be an earlier one than mine then. Mine is a all original R model per my friend who purchased it new and it’s got the large clutch cover.

This one has white plastic in the clutch cover rather than the black rubber piece.

What advantages are there to a 12mm crank? Is 12mm the wrist pin size?

I have a fairly large pile of kilt 10mm 044s....

In your experience, is there anything a guy can do to help keep the crank issues at bay on the 10mm 044s?

Sounds like you might have enough parts to make your hybrid. Unless its just a pile of broke cranks and cases.

Yeah. Never put the saw away without loosening the chain. What really hurts a "weak" crank is running a dull chain till it gets hot and stretched, then tightened up. When that gets put away, the chain cools, contracts, then pulls the crank end out of place. After that, it wobbles, vibrates, then cracks.

No good parts in that pile now. I need to haul it off.

Hmm, don’t think I’ve ever seen one with a white piece in it before.

Yep, never had a 044 with one of those on my bench. That one looks clean though! I’ve had a couple ex tree service 440’s that threw the chain so many times it chewed through the rubber, the back of the clutch cover and into the fuel tank!
