One I restored several years ago.....View attachment 400547
Have a couple av and hard mounts in the red/grey. Also have an early 07 plastic air filter cover which I guess is pretty rare especially since it’s intact, have s-10 rear and top handles a couple old 08 non s. Also have at least one 040 but maybe 2. Also have 2 nice 041 supers that I need to fix in fact can’t remember where I saw it but someone was trying to buy a nice 041 super so maybe after I go over it and loctite it together I’ll sell one of them. The one has been sitting in a shed for over 30 years because the base screws loosened up but the piston and cylinder look good. Was a log home builders saw that he just shelved after it quit and went back to regular 041’s

Yep believe the 040 came out for stihls 40th anniversary. Was only around a few years and got changed to the 041 which is mostly the same minus having an impulse line vs pulling vacuum through the carb intake stack and the 040 had loose crank bearings.

I still own this nice example 030av, I have a soft spot for the 030 and 031's despite the ignition worries that can come with them. An 030av was the first saw I ever paid (back then) good money for, that was over forty years ago. It's a nice reminder of my early days of getting much more into the field of small engine repair. Oh how things have changed, I still pick up these earlier Stihl saws when the come up at a reasonable price and then bring them back to their former glory. In my mind, it's the 030/031 and the 040/041/041av that really put Stihl in the forefront of homeowner saws, followed closely by the Homelite XL 12's.251129-e701b4b4d9d3717efe77ce8736242da0.jpg251130-39750de44cab69f56d7169aa7cfefdec.jpg251131-12eebee61af2372c8bec5f636075c350.jpg

I have a decent 030 that runs well but needs a proper fuel tank, unless some of them came with the 031 top load style.

Looks like mine, yours may be slightly better shape, I also have an early Stihl 045 that’s stamped top no tag with a dual port muffler but it’s orange not red

I owned an early 045 several years ago, it was in great shape and ran very well..... ;)
This one has the dual port muffler but not sure if Stihl ever used that on the standard 045. But I also have heard rumors Stihl build some standard 045’s with dual ports and super or mag cylinders without any special markings. This is just rumors of course, I don’t believe this saw was very heavy use and maybe it did get a dual port off an 056 mag early in life then set on a shelf

Hi old 040.
How many 040s do you have?
Dad has 2.
The first one he bought for falling in 1968? second hand.
Located in Tassie down under.
Cheers Chris
IIRC I only owned one 040 and sold it with my other early restored 041's. I did just buy a later version 041av yesterday to go-over, it does run and would work as is, but I plan to clean this one up and put it on the back burner for a while...... ;)

Sounds like you could use an 041 super to go over sometime as a saw to keep since they’re getting rarer
