Stihl MS170 Chain

I recently bought a new chain for my MS170. I got it on Amazon. The part number is 36360001640. Other info on the label is 50M 3/8 1.3.

The chain is the correct size, but the followers fit too tightly into the groove in the guide bar. When installed the chain won't move. This is not an issue with the guide bar as the old chain worked, fine.

What is the correct part number for the MS170 chain? Any recommend sources?

Chain width is measured in "gauge". 1.3mm is .050 ms170 standard is .043 or 0.9mm which is why it's tight in the bar groove

Here's the deal. Most bars are marked with the required chain pitch, gauge, and the number of drivers. You need all three numbers, off the bar, to correctly order chain.

As far as where to buy...nothing wrong with Amazon, if you confirm you are getting the correct chain. For a few bucks more, a Stihl dealer will sell you a chain. Take the saw in with you when buying your first chain.

What is the correct part number for the MS170 chain?

Typically the MS 170 comes with a 16" inch bar, the chain size for it should be 3/8 picco (pitch), .043 (gauge) and 55 drivers.

The part number you should need will be: 3610 005 0055 - 61PMM3
* 6 - 3/8 picco (pitch)
* 1 - .043 gauge
* P - Picco
* M - Micro
* M - Mini
* 3 - Single Hump Tie Strap

(Here is the box, red outlines the pitch, gauge and drivers, blue outlines the type chain and part number)

Typically the side of your bar will have a stamp or laser engraving of its information and will typically list the pitch, gauge and number of drivers along with the part number.

There are 3/8 p, .050 (gauge) 55 driver chain that is available, but those are typically used for some of the Stihl pole saws.
