Don't know why there would be a hole all the way through to the oiler, but that is where the oil s/b going to the chain (on the inside of the bar).

Saw looks nice other wise.

Freshened up my 262 today with new crank bearings, seals, and a basically new Meteor piston that PA Dan installed just before he traded it to me recently. I didn't do any grinding on the cylinder, I have developed a tendency not to grind on cylinders that are NLA and enjoy them as they are. I did mod the muffler and made a base gasket out of thinner material that got the squish down to .030" from the .043 it was with the OEM gasket.

Also, I managed to do a rough preliminary clean up on the little 024 that is an upcoming project. Cleaned up pretty good, but I'll be able to get it better when it gets fully disassembled. :)

My son keeps talking about getting a Husky 252 or 257 not sure which model and a 262 to rebuild. We have way to many things going on right now to do that. Never to much going on for a 16 year old though. :eusa_dance:

RIDE-RED 350r, I was going to ask you. When you lower the squish area (raising the compression) is there a minimum octane rating fuel you need to run to keep it out of detonation like a car engine with higher compression?

Lower octane is more efficient in a 2 stroke, opposite of a 4 stroke engine, lower detonation point the better.

It not all two strokes, like most motocross two strokes and high performance high compression two strokes may need higher octane to servive. tightening the squish usually reduces the tendency to detonate, most 125 dirt bikes make 33 hp at a lower rpm than a chainsaw and kart guys can get upper 50’s out of them even a 10hp 3120 is considered a low performance two stroke.

Worked all morning, took my wife and boys out for a snack and beers (no beers for the little ones haha), then came home to find my dog had eaten a 2.5# brisket i planned on smoking this evening. Needless to say i went WWF on her with the sheet pan the brisket was on :bash:

2.5# ? Were you the only one eating? I can’t imagine doing that work for less than 5 to 7 #’s.

Took down a dead Ash for the neighbor. Ran some saws with my sons. Was a good time! Got some good firewood and a nice test log!

Got a quick video of the Ash coming down.

In a two stroke, increasing the oil ratio also lowers the octane. However, I think it is less critical in chainsaws because they generally operate at full RPM, and they rev so high the combustion rate is not a major factor.

NYH1.

I've asked the same question and most of the more experienced hands here agree that saws being smaller displacement and much lower power per cc than bikes and sleds are much more forgiving to compression bumps. My 394 has the base and squish cut and blows 210psi, it has no issues running 91 E-free. That thinner base gasket I put in the 262 brought squish down to just about .030" on the nose. I was a little bit excited to run it after the overhaul and clean forgot to pull a compression check. I'll get one sooner or later and post up what it does.

Killed some trees with the 262 today. Ran like a watch all day without a single hitch :)

Funny thing about that is lower octane gasoline has a lower flash point. Two stroke oil has a higher flash point. Octane rating is only about anti knock characteristics. So I think by octane you are trying to say adding oil makes it more volatile like a lower octane gas would, but that is not true.

My understanding of octane rating is the temp at which the fuel ignites, with higher octane requiring a higher temp, thus tolerating higher compression ratios (in cars). I don't understand how oil can lower the octane rating if it does not also lower the flash point, but, admittedly, my knowledge is base on 4 cycle gasoline engines.

The reason octane rating is not important in a diesel engine is that they have direct fuel injection, therefore the fuel ignites when injected rather than when it reaches too high of a temp. Only the air is compressed, before the fuel is injected.
