New head gaskets ready to be smooshed.

Heads installed.

Manual valve lash. Make sure you get it right the first time. I dont even think its possible to do it properly with the engine installed.

Read to drop back in the car.

How are the Subarus, I'm starting a search for something to drive back and forth to work and anywhere else, just so I don't have to keep putting miles on my truck.

They are the perfect car. No problems with them other than the engines. The head gaskets are the weak point. Valve cover gaskets leak all the time too.

If you can do the work yourself i would own one, but if you need a shop to do it, its around $3500 to have it done right.

How often do they fail? Yes I could do it myself if needed. Any years different from others?

Depends on alot of factors. Mainly cooling system maintenance. When the coolant starts to break down it will eat the seal coating on the gasket.

This one is a 2008 with 110k on it.

If you zoom in on the block surface pics i previously posted you will see pitting on the sealing surface. That is a red flag the coolant maintenance was the culprit.

Wife had an 05 Outback and the HG were replaced under warranty before 100k. The fly by wire gas pedal went out at around 130k which meant that you suddenly took you to 30 from 75. I loved that car but I'd stay away from one that is long in the tooth.

I'd run it.

Find an older Lexus LS400. V8 4 doors amd if you can keep your foot out of it you can get high 20s. Was just watching a video on a 1,000,000 mile one and besides timing belts and 3 trans rebuilds the motor is untouched.

I'd really like to find something AWD that way I can use it for other things besides pavement. Looked at a Honda pilot and Volvo xc90 so far. Really liked both of them. I'm a truck guy,but I'm wanting something the family can all get in and be a little adventurous in and not have to worry about get stuck on wet grass and good fuel economy.
