A tree-removal company just gave me a Stihl 029 to restore. The machine screw holding the right side of the handle to the case was missing. I replaced that and have no idea how it vanished.

The tank vent tube was missing, so it was leaking fuel. I replaced that. The saw needed a complete wipe down and clean up. I did that. Carb needed a tune up. I did that.

This saw runs today the same way it did in 2003. Not sure what the difference is between this saw and an MS 290.
029 is slightly less displacement i believe, 029 super is same displacement as ms290.
Edit: just checked, 029 is 45mm, 029 super/ms290 are 46mm

The 029/039 did okay for the intended usage which is a fire wood saw .They didn't do so well in use for a tree company .I have a box of parts from two tree services who tried them .Didn't make it much over a year .

On the flip side I know people who have used them for years and had very little if any problems .

This is the older 029, but it seems to have at least the same power as my 290 that I seldom use. The reason I seldom use my 290 is because I have several 028 Supers on board that love to cut.

Then something else happened. I picked up a Husky 353. Never should have done that because it's a cutting maniac with the same power and over a pound less in weight.

To tell the truth I have no idea what I have, just a pile of parts .I've robbed so many to repair others it's hard to say what I have .Might sound hard to believe but if memory serves I once robbed a clutch segment from one the junkers to repair an 034 clutch .--I've done some weird chit that worked .
