Light switch wiring question

Wow its been a while since I've see that feed thru 3-way diagram. Pretty cool idea...except for the fact that the light fixture is always hot when the light is switched off. On the subject of white wires being used as non-grounded conductors I believe there is an exception that allow it so long as you label the wire at each termination with another color like black, red, or blue. I just put a wrap of phasing tape on them. Usually happens with Romex on switch legs and 3-way travelers.

Yes when the light is off it either has 2 hots, or 2 neutrals. Obviously not safe for anyone to work on. And quite confusing the first time you run into it...
It’s called a Carter 3way. After the guy that came up with it.
