I’ve also had the state inspector tell me to go along with the AHJ’s decision...
It’s not always a win

I also try to understand the thinking behind their reasoning. Now that I work for a contractor, it’s his methods I spar with him on at times. We both have learned things this way. It sharpens you to question and prove things to yourself and others. I e thought things were code and been proven wrong... I learned!
My boss also owes me breakfast on one matter, and a beer and a shot on another [emoji41]

I think the reason for switches needing true neutrals now is for OCCs and Timers.
Probably why we always feed switches and switchleg up to lights.

Yes, they’ve been tapping off the ground for the control circuit for years...

By the way, what’s a false neutral?

Lol. A True neutral is a clean neutral that comes from a feed the panel. There are some neutrals that cannot be used for certain applications.

Please enlighten me. Where else would the neutral come from? If there are 2 circuits in a box, it’s necessary to use the correct one and keep them separate, but they both are derived from the panel.

Generally, it has been illegal to switch the white
Conductor. That is most likely why it was tied into the bundle of black wired, thus switching the black wire coming back up from the switch..which should be tied to the black of the light.

Yup. If anyone likes a challenge. Figure this out.

Feed a 3way sw with 120v at bottom of stairway, run 3 wires to 3way at top of stairs. Now from this box run 2 wires to light, and 2 wires to receptacles on second floor. Light switches on and off with the 3ways properly, and receptacles are hot all the time.
How are the connections made?

And no it’s not legal... but it was at one time...

No way that I can see how to do this without using the grounding conductor, as a grounded
Conductor.

Nope don’t need the grounding conductor. I think it’s harder for electricians to figure out, cuz it’s so against what we’ve learned. I’ll give it a little longer, than post up a drawing of how it’s done.
If it helps it was done back in the early 1900’s mostly knob and tube.

If you draw it out, draw the constants first, what absolutely has to be there, then see what’s left

I have seen that before. Just didn't dawn on me. Did several houses last few years built in 1800s in Newport, RI. Complete rewire and new service.
Knob and tube was scary. Lol

Wow its been a while since I've see that feed thru 3-way diagram. Pretty cool idea...except for the fact that the light fixture is always hot when the light is switched off. On the subject of white wires being used as non-grounded conductors I believe there is an exception that allow it so long as you label the wire at each termination with another color like black, red, or blue. I just put a wrap of phasing tape on them. Usually happens with Romex on switch legs and 3-way travelers.
