I did the transfer cover mod on my 365XT, removed the carb adjustment limiters too.

I got it running pretty well. Set the H setting at about 12,800 RPM. I had the bar buried in big hardwood. Under load in the cut it made a ever so slight popping sound. It cut great. Should I bring it down to maybe 12,500 RPM?

I'm using my new Tech Tach TT-20K tach. I know the saw has the limiting coil. Also, I bought a new spark plug for it. I forgot to put it in before running it. Not sure if that could be my problem. The plug in it ran fine before the mod.

Thanks, NYH1.

My 2172 I had liked to be set right at the 13,300 limiter.

As hukyboy mentioned, the 372XT/2172 has a 13,300 limiter. I'm not sure if the 365XT/2166 use the same limiter. The 365XT/2166 max RPM is 13,100.

What do you think the popping is from?

Ok, I had some time to run my saw today. I put a new spark plug in it and let it warm up. Made some cuts. Checked the RPM's, it was about 12,000 which 800 lower then I set it the other day. It was still making a noise. Hard to say if it was popping or four stroking/hitting the rev limiter. It was a very slight noise.

I adjusted the carb and brought it up to 13,000. My son and I made more cuts. Now it doesn't seem to be popping in the cut. But if I take pressure off the bar while cutting, it seems to be either four stroking or hitting the rev limiter. Free revving it on the tach it doesn't do either.

The other day it was 65° with almost no humidity. Today it's 61° with a lot more humidity. If any of this matters. It runs good though.

What do you guys think?

If you were able to tune it to 13k on a tach without the reading going crazy it sounds like you’re good to go. If you’re worried about it hitting the limiter and being too lean back the tune down to 12.9k and enjoy.

The xtorqs have a bit different engine sound than a oe 372.

After my last post my son and I went out back to cut some wood. My saw ran great. No popping, no four stroke/rev limit sounds. It just ran like a beast. Maybe it just needed to be ran. As of now I'm real happy with it. Hopefully it stays this way!

I never ran a OE 372. I did have a 365 Special. It was stock. Just put mix and bar oil in it and ran it. Probably should've keep it.

I’m partial to the oe saws but the xtorqs run well.

Ran the saw today, runs like a raging monster!

There’s always a bias towards the old oe but I think the xtorq runs a tad stronger out of the box stock.

I had a 365 Special. It ran good, I liked it. Hard to say which ran better/stronger out of the box for me. I never ran them side by side. I've been more then happy with both.

I think the transfer cover mod woke the 365XT up some for sure.
