I even put a little beak on there for real life action..

Yep. I'll get all the good I can out of it.

I've tried air, brake cleaner, carb cleaner. without good enough results to bother with.
So I just grind em dirty. Then re- dress or spray the wheel off when it stops grinding and starts rubbin'..

What you spray the wheel off with?

Brake cleaner. But even it quits working after a few uses. Then time to re-dress.

You'd think those would take oil off. I bet it's burned wood residue. The brown stuff you notice about 10 minutes after your oiler hole gets plugged.

And those chains been riding around in the back of a truck for a while.
Lord knows what's on them, but it's nasty. And everywhere.

I'll have to try brake cleaner instead of dressing all the time

What fluid are you using in the USC (ultrasonic cleaner)? We use water at work with some Alconox industrial detergent. But that is for cleaning laboratory glassware.
I just use simple green and water. More water than simple green because I'm cheap.

Here's a Oregon 72LP I filed up in 1988 for a competition cutting 16" round wet cottonwood on Vancouver Island against guys like Ron Hartill, Brian Herlihy.
Mods are "smooth" but cutting edge is a little jagged from banging around the shop for the last 29 years.
Ran it on a 064 stock appearing with 084 carb.
No stoning, no dog boning, no flattening rivets which in my opinion doesn't help clear wet cottonwood chips out of the kerf.
Brand new smooth high depth gauge to compensate for sinking in that spongy wood plus a little more cutter ahead of the rear rivet. Filed with a old 1970's Granberg chisel bit jig with Windsor triangular chisel bit file.

To clean nasty chains I'll soak in degreaser of choice, light brushing, rinse and blow off with air.
Or you can spray it with wd40 and go cut a few cookies of cotton wood if it's not too dull.

Yep..
That'll do it...
Green cottonwood has a knack of swelling the kerf back shut on your way through it.
Cleans a chain like a scotch bright pad.

Do you guys like save edge or pferd? I want to try starting with square and want to buy one file to see if I like it. And can't afford the atop at this time. They are both the same price within reason (one buck difference).

I'm a beginner square filer and I used pferd, it worked good for me. Converting round to square I noticed it changed the look of the cutter pretty quick. I've also heard good things about save edge too.
