my buddy said he was going to a auction and asked me about a 488 he sent me a pic in text message and looked complete with bar and chain . he asked me if i wanted it and i told him i would for less than 50 well last night he texted me said he got it for me and took it home 7 pulls on choke it popped took off choke and one pull it was running and idling . there are not many shindiawas here and id like to know more about them

Congrats on the 488. That's a heck of a price. There's good info to be found on this model. I'm certainly no expert, but some things to look at are the carb and the muffler. Some of them had a carb with a fixed H jet. Fully adjustable carbs can be had on eBay I think. Also, some has a USDA muffler which is really choked up. I opened mine up and swapped out the carb for an adjustable one. Much better now.

My 488 has been my absolute most reliable saw. It has never once failed to start. Other than cleaning the air filter, I've never serviced any part of it.

Was going to use this used piston in my 575. The seller discovered crack be fore he shipped it. How did this crack happen?

Intake side I believe. I have two of these pistons on hand. One is scored but checks out full size with the calipers. The second is pretty undersized,44.68 and looks like its been cleaned up previous. I'm thinking that's to loose.
