Quick update since so many took the time to weigh in:

Looking at 50cc saws as a "do it all" saw for my buddy since he's building shooting ranges on his land. Torn between the 5105 and Husky 550. Buying the 5105 makes certain that we get him PSE, spare chains, etc. The 550 is pretty sweet, though.

There are a couple of nice 50cc Dolmars on Fleabay right now for well under $300.00. You ain't gonna find a 336, 550, or MS261 for that price unless it's completely trashed. I'm very happy with my 5105. Fortunately it looks like Makita is still going to keep using Dolmar part numbers so parts availability should not be a problem.

We're upping the budget a little. Unsurprisingly, a hero like my buddy has a lot of friends that want to buy him a nice housewarming gift :D

I missed a used PS-5105 for a nice price today, called half a day too late. :(
To remedy my sorrow I purchased a (unseen) PS-7310 instead, should arrive in two days. :eaea:

I was really warmed up to get that PS-5105, I am hopeful another good looking one will come along for a nice price.

Better act soon. Supposedly, all we will have here at some point are Dolmaks. Already many vendors are out of the Dolmars. To me, Makita is a chainsaw maker like Dolmar is a cordless drill maker.:BangHead:

I still need to scrape together enough money to upgrade my 6400 :(
It's just 200ish $ to do it the proper way, or 100ish $ to go the AM BB route. ;)

I made it easy on myself, just bought a 7900 to accompany my 6400 and I wouldn't wanna miss either one of them.

In my eyes the 6400 is a solid, good saw - I have no complaints whatsoever! :icon12:

You'll get there . . .

And...oddly enough, a SEAL Chief that is being medically retired due to wounds suffered in the line of duty has a lot of generous friends :D. Looks like it's going to be a 550 XP with auto tune, decked out. I know there's good saws for sale on here, but this needs to be new and factory supported.

421, 545, 550, 5105, 6100, all good saws. Nothing says best friend like a 2 saw plan. Something like a 3601, 435, 421 and a 6100. Very hard to beat

I'm limited to what he can get local dealer support on, but the two saw option is becoming increasingly viable. So, 40cc and 60cc Huskys or Stihls? Or 70cc for the bigger saw?

50 and 70 is a nice combo...I don't care much for anything husky had below 50. The 550xp is a nice saw, and if your keeping it all husky a 365 or 372xp would compliment it nice. Or you can just jump right to a 390xp lol

I've learned to love all saws over the years...for some reason I have mostly dolmars at the moment but have owned all brands. I was under the impression you already bought the husky. Stihl is also good. They do have a decent 40cc saw...241c...and also 261, 362, 461 etc. depends what your looking to spend and if you want a 1 saw plan or 2... or more lol

So, we ended up pooling a bit of money together... I made contact with his local Stihl/Husky dealer, told them to put the 550XP and MS262 in his hands, see which one he liked best. I also got them to roll out the hillbilly red carpet for this hero and they darn sure did! The shop owners threw in on the haul and everyone else at the store that day had to wait as my friend got taken care of.
