Veneer is such a unicorn. Tree can look beautiful on the stump, then you drop & buck it only to find ingrown bark or something that takes it out of veneer grade. It’s a crap shoot IMO
The veneer guys around here buy standing timber. The signs are there if you know what to look for. Dude explained a lot of it to me but it’s somthing that’s takes experience

I think this has driven our value up. Ash used to be mainly used in the baseball bat industry here. Now it’s use it while you can. I have A LOT of ash to bring out of my woods. Good healthy trees that are otherwise doomed to be beatle kill.

Just means our Alder will be going up in value more which is nice since it grows like a weed and doesn’t need thinned.

I've cut black oak over 4 foot on the stump that's been perfectly solid. Its all dependent on the soil and the direction of the slope they are on .
Some of it here once it gets over roughly 2 foot it starts getting overmature, seems like it doesn’t live as long as white oak. I’ve cut some solid big ones though. However I agree, it depends on the conditions.

Dropped a lot of my big sugar maple a couple days ago. Maybe only 2 veneer logs, all others have end defects like ingrown bark...dammit. Oh well, they’ll still bring good money.

Pulled everything out yesterday, got 1,493bdf out of 5 trees. Doesn’t sound like a lot but when working solo it’s a long days work to pull 20 logs out. Especially considering skidding took 30 minutes round trip. A couple of the butt logs had to be pulled one at a time, Sugar maple is HEAVY.

I had 2,301bdf in 43 logs on that first 3/4 load out. I already have 2,395bdf on the landing in only 32 logs. Pulling consistently bigger timber. Hoping to get at least 10 more big logs out today and that might make a load because they’re so big....fingers crossed.

Funny to me seeing different length wood. Everything around here gets cut 102"

It’s weird to even think stuff gets cut that short, out here short is 17’ most loads have to be a minimum of 33’ for the mill to even consider them anymore. Is there anything out there straight enough to make 32’s?

Must be local differences, kinda funny to me that mills are that different throughout the country.

This is Doug fir 32s from a 25 year old thinning stand. From what we’ve understood most of the world is having to switch to longer lengths the mills are wanting the over run more.

It depends on what products the mills are producing as well. I cut on a Roseburg Lumber sale near Glendale in 2006 and it was 80% Pacific Madrone.

They wanted all the Madrone cut at 16' to 20' lengths regardless of diameter and hauled out via Mule train because they were making flooring with it.

I have almost double the bdf in these piles then I had in that first 3/4 load. First load had 2,307bdf in 43 logs, now have 4,263 in 49 logs. Average diameter is much bigger, not sure it will all fit on a 10 wheeler.

Finally found a candidate for veneer....maybe. Sugar maple with almost no heart wood. Minor end defect on one of them.

When it comes to walnut, only the heartwood is what they want for veneer.
I don’t know much about any other types of wood though when it comes to veneer
It’s the opposite for Hard maple and Ash, my primary timber. One of the requirements is 1/3 heart or less. The tree with almost no heart I posted pics of is extremely rare to find. Especially being a woods tree that’s never been tapped for syrup.

Well gents my logging adventure has come to an end for now. Things have started to thaw out, getting the logs out of the woods isn’t the problem it’s my yard. Tore it up BAD stacking only 7 more logs on the pile. I’ll probably pick it back up again once things dry out. The good news, I pulled another load after only 3 days.
