AND for $150 more, you can start with one of these...:) And from what I can see, you would be a bit ahead on the parts quality.

Over 2,700 views so far. It appears this review is quite better than the kit saws reviews. Thanks Walt, I've come to admire your insight and your willingness to post your findings.

Wonder if they really do have different grade parts??? If the prebuilt saw has functional parts where we normally had trouble maybe thats the case?

I bet they cherry pick the best of the batches out for the assembled saws.

Anything is possible. Walt is top notch. The review is worth the time (at least to me).

When your job is attaching the widget and it don’t fit, you drop it on the floor and reach in the bin for another.

How is it after a month or so of use? I got a bud interested in one. I tried to talk them out of it. It is €300 to our door here in Ireland...

I ordered mine today. Its arriving as a kit. I need a bigger saw for a lot of big oak and maple from a September wind storm we had here. I will be moding it. But, not till next year. I did order the big bore kit and the wrap handle. This thing is going to get worked. A lot. I'm expecting parts to fail and it not make it threw the spring/summer/fall in one piece. But, I need this tool. So. Here we go!

Replace the piston pin bearing with OEM, and the rings with Caber, and spray some WD 40 on the rest of the bearings as soon as you get them to flush any grit out, and it should last you a long time.

I also use an OEM Elastostart pull cord.

Watch out for those 660 clone aluminum flywheels. Had a 660 clone come in the other day that was a pre assembled saw and it broke the flywheel in two and tore off the starter cover and ripped his pants up. Luckily it didnt cause serious injury

This particular saw wore stihl color. My point is that all these clones that i have worked on have the flywheel built in the same manner. All aluminum and a magnet with a cast iron or sintered center hub, instead of using a machined steel hub like stihl uses. This seems like a huge safety issue. This Isnt the first clone i have seen with flywheel hub and or key issues

Certainly something that has worried me with the desire to mod saws up to higher RPM. Saws of any color BTW; but just curious why would a cast hub vs machined hub matter vs. the actual aluminum melt chemistry? I would be way more nervous about things like porosity and the quality of the casting. To this point I haven't seen any failures but there is always a first time. Be curious if you have some close ups of that flywheel, especially around where the fractures were. Also if you have seen a few, pics of those so we could see or identify a trend or a cause.

    Do they make poly flywheels?

What i think most likely happened with that split flywheel is that the nut was overtightened and split the hub, then flywheel came loose and hammered on the key, which i did see damage to keyway cut into crank. The hub on this flywheel seemed to have very course grain and was quite brittle. Almost like it was made with sintered bronze, but it was magnetic.

Funniest part about the whole deal was the customer insisted that his saw was really a genuine stihl product. I showed him were the serial number was supposed to be and it was just a blank spot

I have not had any issues with the AM flywheels, other than one or two that spun the first time due to poor fitment on the crank.

IIRC, the center seems to be steel, bonded to aluminum (or similar). I have built numerous 660s and 440 BB or Hybrids w/o any issues.

After the get acquainted period you will use it more for the camera than actual telephone calls.
