Anyone directly compared the new 462 to the new 572 yet?

Yes, a 28 or 32... if your running a 20 on a 70cc I suggest you try a 262/562/ms362

Exactly. Even a 24” is ok for a 70cc imo, anything under that is under equipping. BUT, to each their own.

Never understood this mentality. I don't like to wait on the saw. A 70ish cc saw with a 20" 3/8 bar is one of the most common setups around here for frequent cutters. Im not saying a 562/362 wont run a 20" bar ok, but a 372/440/460/461 does it better. More torque, runs cooler cause it isn't being overworked, oils better, typically built better as well. Plus, the shorter bars have less cutters to sharpen. I'll run a 24/28 on a 460 occasionally if I need to but I usually just grab a 90cc class saw if I need more than a 20" bar anyway. Heck I run a 24 on my 395 and never thought it was under equipped.

Just a preference thing man. Completely understand where you’re coming from. I have various saw sizes with bars that I have come to prefer on them. In a normal world, most folks don’t have multiple saws to choose from and is really kind of goofy. BUT, when a saw is being demonstrated for its power I want to see it actually working hard, not buzzing cookies with a 16” bar in wood that’s barely harder than refrigerated butter. Just don’t make sense on a 70cc saw imo. Like I said, to each their own and my opinion don’t mean jack lol

Out here most of us are running 32’s on 372’s heck even 562’s cutting oversized fir, cedar, hemlock, spruce, alder and maple a 24” on down doesn’t have much use other then a small landing saw.

That’s it right there, you run the length you need for the wood you’re processing. That’s a way more valid point than my “matching saws to bar size” method...lol! I very rarely need anything longer than a 28”, but just in case, I have a 394 on the shelf wearing a 36”. I’m really starting to feel stupid for having so many saws:eyepop:. But I like them :D

It’s more of the professional fallers have been driven to the stupidly steep ground or extreme oversized say 5’ and up thanks to tethering machines. On the area I work last year they had half a dozen hand fallers, this year they have one half time guy spread between 5 different companies.

Dang that sounds brutal man. They always find new ways to get to timber once all the easy wood is gone. Can’t say I know how it feels because I’m just a firewood guy and I cut my wood off my property. Some of my biggest trees are over 5’ but I don’t ever want to cut them down because I like them. I go after the smaller stuff that’s usually 18” to 30” in diameter. Child’s play compared to the stuff you’re cutting.

I always ran bar sizes following the manufacturers recommendations unless they were silly, like a 390 only being rated to 28". It can definitely carry a greater bar than that and work efficiently.

As far as 70cc saws go? Better be able to handle a 28" ;-)

German dealers have to order Saws complete with bar and chain.
Biggest bar you can order together with a MS 440 was 50cm/20 inch.
Biggest bar for the MS 880 75 cm/30 inch.
There is no way to get a Saw from Stihl withou bar and chain here in Germany.

Same here. If I need bigger bar on the saw I am using, I just go with bigger saw with bigger bar. Lol

Hopped up 395 pulling a 60” bar and chain, 390’s will pull up to a 42, 70cc will pull up to a 36” bar semi skip setup.

Yup! Definitely not the most economical arrangement but fun nonetheless lol.

Me: Honey, that tree is too big for my bar.

Wife: So get a bigger bar.

Me: But I need a saw big enough to run the bigger bar

Wife: Use your big saw.

Me: It’s not big enough, I need to buy another one.

Wife: Rolls eyes

LOL!
