Yes it will bolt directly on, same carb
Thanks Dustin. I thought I remembered that but wanted to verify. I have the beginnings of my next 288 build on the way and will be using a 281 carb from another member.
So; the difference between the 281 and 288 is just the bore size? Nothing else?

Just the bore, nothing else. Some like the 281 better and it is a good 5 cube saw as well.

I recently saw a 281 overseas that had the boss for the decomp, just needed drilled and tapped, first time I ever saw 1 like that.
was this the one I mentioned about bidding on? It went for £143 what a steal... I missed out on it as I was at an xmas do.. I bid 130 and never remembered to look.

It’s gotta be a little tricky to drill that hole without chipping the plating when you break through.
Shape a bit of steel to the radius of the cylinder wall and pack it tight against the plating with some little wooden wedges. Stops the drill firing through on break through. Works a treat on plated car parts..

Ted is spot on. The chamber on a 281 is smaller than a 288 but have no decomp hard on recoil starter.

They are terrible that way. I have a ported one that is .031 squish and 200psi+. It is a pain to start, but it doesn't want to stop once it gets going.

Wow that’s impressive for .031 squish. My 288 came in at 180psi with .032 and I was pretty happy with that
