I have always run a 28” bar on the 066. One time I put a 36” on to cut through this triple maple stump and for me it was scary. I was trying to cut a huge round to make a table out of and when it came time to cut thru (finally), the chain jumped off. It nicked my forearm and left a whelp on the front of the saw. Only paint missing on that saw happened that day when the chain jumped off. Haven’t used it since (the 36”) but left with a clear understanding what 36” of razor sharp chain moving a 13,500 rpm can/could do if released upon an unsuspecting soul.
The tabletop was not to be. The slab I cut curled up like a thick potato chip. Oh well.
I’m not sure how the 500i would do with the 36” bar. I might try it one day but I will be wrapped in protection when I do. It’s off being ported BTW.

Early 660 is the same saw as an 066 round top like I have. I don’t think the early ones were as choked up as the late 660’s but mine was still pretty small on exhaust outlet. I think the 066/early 660 and will be close to a 500i

The later 660's not only had a choked up exhaust, but really bad port timing. The 500i has better rpm and far better acceleration. In big wood I would say a good 660 will have more grunt, and we all know the 660 was a tank. Really just the fact we're trying to compare a 80cc saw to a 90 says a lot. But we really are talking about a saw in a smaller cc class. To me the closest saw I own to the 500i in size and power is the original 7900, the 390xp is just a bigger saw, power wise a stock 500i may take a 390.

We're splitting hairs, that's what we do. Fact is we have some nice modern saws to work with, and hopefully saws like the 500i will make other brands step up to the plate. Back in the mid 2000's make no mistake about it, the 7900 was eating into the pride of both Stihl and Husqvarna, even if they didn't consider Dolmar a real long term threat.
