G'day all, who knows anything about 540's and autotune?

Got a 540 the boss picked up for cheap, it was new and looks to be an early model, I'd post the serial number if I could find it....

So, it's been a problem since it turned up, has been back to the "dealer" countless times and is now sitting on the shelf getting dusty which is a shame.

I've been told that it starts ok the first time but is hard to get warm, doesn't want to restart when warm, doesn't want to restart when up a tree, doesn't idle anytime.
Other complaints are it's the wrong colour(?), is too small for a boat anchor and the wrong shape for a wheel chock.

I just took it to the woodpile to see what's what and it runs very well at full revs, cuts well, good power, the problem is it will not idle at all, it really drags it's feet during acceleration and does not want to restart

Is this a known issue for the early 540xpat?

Can it be fixed?

At the moment it is pretty much junk so any and all help much appreciated

Cheers

Andy

Does it want to run with the choke on? Not just pop, actually fire for a bit? Try some fresh fuel at 50:1

It does have an idle adjust of some type under the filter. It has some effect, half a turn anti-clockwise (from memory) has a bit of an effect.

Starts on choke then dies as normal, then it floods if kept on choke and pulled over. Flick choke off and it'll start on full throttle then die at idle.

Bad seals or warped intake may be the culprit.
Haven't stripped it yet, looks like fun...

It's really done no work at all yet, guess I'll get stripping

Its got a more serious problem that any band aid tune is going to get around.
I faffed with mine till it was a workable saw, the thing that totally makes me lose my short with it is I cant seem to get the fuel line to hang in the right spot when it has less than half a tank. Clip it on your harness and it starves, hold it for cutting and its fine.

A vacuum and pressure test doesn't require a full strip down.
Good to know, I can strip a stihl 150/192/201 with my eyes closed, be interesting to see how husky build them too

I've never worked on one but i've heard its a real PITA .

Chris, I've never run one or wrenched one yet, but I used to feel the same way about 200ts and 201ts too...untill you crack a few open then they slide together like butter...
Maybe we just need a few busted ones to learn on ....

No, not a known issue, but that particular saw has issues. & it's not a AT saw.
It's Ozzie spec, has x-torq and auto tune written on the recoil cover, blue and red wires around carb. Haven't started on it yet but soon

Pull it apart (after a pressure/vac test) chances are the ring is seized in the piston with carbon, common problem with X-Torq/Strato-Charged engines. We call it "the RedMax disease."
