Trying to install clutch-side seal on 10mm 044. Looks like the “fat” part of the crank tapers earlier? Had to drive the seal too far (based on how it looks). Looks like the seal lip isn’t seated correctly. Passed pressure test, but I’m skeptical. Anyone have any insight?

In pics, the dirty saw is an 046 for reference, and the last pic is the seal & gasket kit I’m using.

Thank you!

Your seal is driven in too far. There's a sleeve that goes down over the crank and meshes up with the oil seal - the oil pump worm gear rides on the sleeve.

You'll need to see if you can back that seal out without damaging it. I made a tool for that out of a tuning screwdriver - I bent the first 3/8" of the blade of
the screw driver out 90 degrees so I can manipulate seals with it.

Does the seal go over the sleeve? With the seal flush in the bearing, there was prob a 16th inch gap between the seal and the crank.

When the 044 first came out, Stihl used a rubber o-ring under the bushing. Over time it was discovered that the o-ring would dry out and break into several pieces,
rendering it as effective as tits on a tomcat.

Like Kevin said, use a light coat of sealant underneath and some grease topside and life will be good.

Clarification: Motoseal between bushing and crank, grease on outside of bushing (between bushing and seal)?

On the Asian saws I've done, the seal is pre installed and I just grease the crap out of that sleeve … inside and out … and the seal … and have not had any problems.
