Going to go look at a used Shindaiwa 242 weedeater after work, supposedly has only residential use on it. Guy is asking $125.00. It has 23.9 cc and steel drive shaft, so it fits between the Echo SRM-230 and SRM-266. New, it runs about $300.00. Anybody have experience with this model?

The dude never called me back when I told him I was on the way to come look at it. So, I think I am going to treat my trusty old Poulan 2400 to a rebuild instead!

The guy with the 242 called me yesterday, said we could meet after work. So we did, and the 242 looks like it will be a good weed eater with a good cleaning and some basic maintenance. It had good compression but wouldn't start. Not surprising given there was only a shot glass of stale fuel in the tank. Dude said he would take 85.00 for it, so the 242 came home with me. Will post a pic soon.

So what Echo is this thing comparable to?

It's 23.9 cc, so it fits between the Echo SRM-230 and 266. Interestingly, a solid driveshaft is optional on the Echoes but standard on Shinny. There is a family resemblance but this is definitely not a corporate twin.

Filled up with fresh fuel and she started right up! The debris shield is missing and there is the sort of black grime buildup on the carb and tank that tends to accumulate from sitting in the garage, other wise I cant find anything wrong with it.

Did some more research and turns out this is a real pre-Echo Shindaiwa. It says "Shindaiwa Kogyo Ltd." on the manufacturer's label and has a five digit serial number. Post-merger units say "Yamabiko Corp." and have much longer serial numbers. Shindaiwa still has the owner's manuals and parts listings for the pre-Echo units on their website so I downloaded them. The 242 and 282 are Shindaiwa designs and still in production.

Put an hour's use on the T242 yesterday and it worked great. Definitely an upgrade from the Echo SRM-225 I had before. I haven't put the tach on it, but the 242 seems to be more low revving than most. Reminds me of the old Green Machine weedeaters I spent so many hours with working on a golf course in high school.

I put many hours on a T25 in high school, excellent machine.

My T242 was missing the debris shield, as is the case for all used weedeaters. My eyes just cant get used to not having one, it looks nekkid. Keeps the line even length too. The factory shield is really big and looks prone to cracking, also it's $40.00. Found a new Redmax TRZ230 shield on Fleabay for $15.00 delivered and ordered it. Fits perfectly, probably ought to buy some spares for future used weedeaters.

I have put quite a few hours on the T242 and it hasn't missed a beat. Runs even better with a new air and fuel filter. I got a new plug for it, however the old one looks fine so no sense in replacing it right now.

Just pulled an older Japan made T242 out of the junk pile at work and got her going just needed a trimmer head from another T242. Runs good no issues just need to pull the plastic plug and adjust the H side a bit.

Hey, anybody know how I can free up the H needle on the carb for this machine? OEM part number for the carb is 62100-81010. My Echoes just had a plastic plug to be drilled out. On this one, the hole is smaller and I don't see a plug or anything. It looks like the needle may have been set at the factory with no provision for later adjustment at all.

Would it be possible to swap the carb?
