A few years back I picked up some trilink brand files on clearance for 2/$.99...not sure they're even worth that. Touched up my chain (RS) a few times and they were pretty much done. Lol. Cheap junk! Really impressed with both Stihl and pferd. I compared the two and the shank on the pferd is maybe an eighth inch shorter than Stihl brand. Filing they feel identical though.

I use stihl and vallorbe, good results

This thread became alive

Well Vallorbe makes the files for everyone they just choose the design like aggressiveness etc.

I was a heavy Stihl user but just got the Oregon Swiss made 4.5mm box to try as advised by a Husky mechanic who was at Vallorbe and they are better than Stihl in every way.

What is laughable is at the top of the file where Stihl always has grinded the elements their is a blue line like painting

I just bought two 3 packs of Stihl 7/32" files yesterday and I compared them to the couple of year old pack I already had

They are all Swiss made and the old and new files appear identical but interestingly the part numbers on the packages are different

And the design is different
Also the boxes no more grey box for Stihl

But check the design
Stihl’s choice was the soft ground file where Oregon finally got the more aggressive.

I ll get some pics tomorrow

Apparently I need to look closer

Actually I will try the old and new side by side and see if I can feel any difference

Stand by...

Tomorrow i ll get few pics

So I got my strongest reading glasses and pulled the last unused file from the 3 year old pack and one from the new pack

Side by side they appear identical except for a slight color difference in the metal and a different letter stamped beneath the logo

The newer file has a J and the older has a P under the logo

BB3FB789-E4C9-408C-920E-ABD5D5C2B31C.jpeg

As I stated earlier the newer packs have a different part number

98CE34C0-FC89-4192-966A-1E24F21A71CD.jpeg

I laid them side by side, mixed them up and then picked them up one at a time and took a few strokes on a fairly new Oregon chain

I honestly felt no difference and had to look for a small black felt tip mark I made on the newer one so I could tell them apart

If Oregon is making good quality files I would certainly try a couple

So earlier in this thread several of us were ragging on Oregon files and sharing our poor experiences with them

@RI Chevy came to their defense and said he didn’t understand our hating on them

Maybe he actually got some of the newer better ones that @Evansaw is talking about

I admit I haven’t tried any in several years

Jeff is really nice guy who got innocently mixed with all of us chainsaw gangsters. Now he already knows lots of secrets so he can’t leave alive...

Well i used to be (prolly Stihl am) more brand oriented however there are useful things & tools around

So if i had my eyes and ears closed prolly I wouldn’t check those files a friend told me about.

So please check in pics the old grey Stihl box, the new white orange box (actually Stihl changed from 2018 even the grey chain boxes to the white orange ones) and the Swiss made Oregon

Now you can see up where Stihl has the logo there is blue paint in Oregon...

And the new Oregon design is more aggressive.

It’s not a brand bashing here everyone has his choices so if you are used to Stihl files like i was maybe you don’t wanna change.

Myself I liked the Oregon for what i got them. Will see

The difference in how aggressive the cut is on the files in the second pics is obvious, thats for sure

I have to admit I have never even seen a box of Stihl files

The place I pick them up is a Stihl section within a local ACE hardware and all I have ever seen is the vinyl 3 packs

They may have boxes in the back but I have never asked

I generally pick up a couple of 3 packs at a time which lasts me quite a while

Where are you finding the newer Oregon files that cut so well?

I don't want to buy a whole box but if the same quality is available in a 2 pack I would give them a try

I will take a good look at the big box hardware stores the next time I am in there

I looked on the Oregon site and there are no dealers in the Anchorage area

Well unless they contract with different makers for different markets hopefully I can find the newer better ones on this side of the pond as well

I think the issue of different makers at different times is always going to be a problem for re-branded products sold by companies that don't actually produce them; they just contract them out

You get used to a certain brand being great quality and then they switch vendors and all of a sudden the quality goes to heck

I used Craftsman tools as an example earlier in this thread

I have seen them switch vendors over the years and the quality varies from damn near Snap-On quality to Walmart garbage quality even though outwardly they look the same

That's what can happen when you contract out production on a low bid basis

If the file sharpens the cutter then I am hapoy and satisfied. Lol
I'm easy too please

It's funny we stress so much over a $1.50 item that is a throwaway

But damn I do love the feel of a good quality fresh file and just grit my teeth hard when you pick one up and it skips and catches and acts like crap

It's the little things in life...

Time for more coffee

I believe (might be wrong but) that all files from all 3 brands Pferd, Stihl, Oregon are coming from Vallorbe Swiss.

After all if you go to Vallorbe website you ll even find the complete chainsaw file kits that the brands dress to their colors!

Brands can choose from many different designs, etc.

I cannot be more happy if i know Vallorbe makes for all of them cause they are the best out there. Chainsaw files are a small thing to them cause they actually make the more specific and highly precise jewelry and watches files.

At one time brands had various options for markets i have some Stihl made in Brazil files.

I am becoming more open minded or i m getting older...
