I spent the entire afternoon trying to sort out a Stihl 028 Super. This is a saw I took in trade on an 046. I didn't want to take a trade, told the guy I didn't want to trade but he more or less insisted even after I told him he could sell it for more than I would give him. Anyway, it has a strange problem that I think he was aware of and that's why he wanted me to get it and not some poor innocent victim (which I now feel like)

Anyway, the saw has good compression, clean piston, light usage and in excellent cosmetic condition. It started and ran but would have erratic idle issues. ie, tune it and then it would seem to go out of tune.

So I do all the usual checks, went through the carb and so forth. It starts and cuts for quite some time and then starts getting weird.

Last time I used it, it was bogging. So I have a previous customer that really really wants this saw but I won't sell it with "issues". I reconfirmed the bogging today and went through the carb again. Looked like a piece of dirt in the main jet. I put it back together and it ran fine. Tuned it up and went to the woodpile. Decided I just can't justify cutting cookies so I chose to noodle my larger rounds into firewood size. That's productive, sort of.

Ran a whole tank through it and it worked fine until right at the end, it started picking up idle speed a little at a time until the chain was happily spinning at idle.

Took it back to the shop, cleaned the air filter and checked a few more things, retuned it and repeat the above with the same results.

My thinking now is that the tuning screws are actually moving so the saw is retuning itself and it's not some obscure fuel or air issue. Still to be confirmed... You should see the pile of noodles I have now, lol.

What color is the diaphragm? I had a hell of a time with one of mine until I went from blue to tan or vice versa. Got pretty good at tearing it down in the mean time. That was a few years back, wish I could remember. Pretty sure it liked the tan cross hatched diaphragm when all way said & done...

That happened on my 044 a few years ago. Was driving me nuts. A full carb rebuild did nothing. Ordered new spring for under the adjustment screws (50 cents each) and the problem was solved!

If it turns out to be moving screws, I can probably come up with some by robbing them off another carb... I hope it's that as this really has me scratching my head. The saw runs great (except when it doesn't)

The instrument is a "Hurdy-Gurdy" , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurdy-gurdy
I didn't even realize an instrument that sophisticated existed till two days ago.
YouTube suggested Patty Gurdy videos to me as I was watching symphonic/gothic metal video clips - it is possibly the best ever suggestion YouTube gave me!

I admit it, she's gorgeous and I don't mind looping her video clips over and over again. :)
What's not to like on a German redhead featuring a rather unique accent!

On topic:
I shortened my remaining play log a little bit this evening - and yes I made a video clip of the fun. Semi-seasoned oak log.

Had to run up to the farm this afternoon before work to check on water for the broilers (we've got about 125 on pasture right now and they keep running out of water). While I was there the boss showed up and began to tell me of all the stuff his buddy is unloading on him, including a spare engine for the big Chevy C60.

Then he just nonchalantly says... oh, and he wants to store his sawmill here for a while too... and he wants me to use it...

I was like.... cool... you should let him...

About halfway to work I had to get out of the car so I could  in the middle of the street...

I've been continuing to mess with the 028 Super. I've now got enough noodles/chips to fill the back of a pick up truck.
I tried changing the carb screw springs with some from a new carb (old ones looked fine) and then I just kept tuning and cutting, etc...
Today, I fueled it up (had to mix more gas) and went through a tank and a half of fuel without any issues so I declared it "fixed". Not sure what the actual problem was, maybe just needed a years worth of use within the past week. And, as a side note, I "split" an entire truckload of wood by noodling for the first (and probably the last) time ever.

A C60 with a 292 hauled loads of corn or soybeans for many years from my uncles farm. It burned in a pasture fire a few years ago.
The 292 is/was a good motor for pulling and would run forever.
Take the 366 crank, its forged and put it in a big block to make a 408 dirt track motor.
The real 427s are hard to find. We bought a farm truck just for the motor parts about 15 years ago.

Today i had to go to work after a week off, depressing.
I am now pondering a 4 mix hedgetrimmer motor with low RPM and only 70lbs compression.
IT was junk when it left the factory so i can't bugger it up any worse.

Replaced the seals in a Homelite VI-955. Now I need to find some wood and tune it.

Working on re- clearing a driveway through some family land that I use for hunting. We did everything with bow saws and axes when I was a kid I remember going out and cutting this stuff from the time I was about 6-12 with my dad and older brother. I know this is a tree that I cut at that time due to its size, as o was responsible for 4” and under trees at the time that driveway was cutout. We pretty much quit doing so when my dad started working in KS and came home about a week every 3 months. Just interesting to see after all these years.

So does it have more power or just harder to start?

Painting the ceiling in living room while everyone is asleep. That’s a hard task with toddlers running the house!

Processed an axis deer over the last two days

Put high flow piston and control bolt in 461 oil pump during quiet time it keeps up with cutting hard dry stuff now.
