The Stihl 034 I'm working on must be an older model, as it has a front style chain adjuster.

Also, it did not have the stamped steel protector plate (see part # 24), nor do I see any place to screw one on to the engine block.

Similarly, I do not see any holes that would be necessary to attach parts # 21, 22 if I wanted to convert to a side bar adjustment.

Questions:

1) Did the early saws not have the steel plate (#24) and the bar just went against the block?

2) Is is possible to convert this saw to "side adjustment" bar adjuster or not?

Was looking to order the parts, but don't see any way to attach them.

Thanks.

Mike the 034av that Al turned into a monster 036 for me was a low hour, unmolested saw. It never had that metal plate. I had heard that most did not. I think that all 034 had the front adjuster. I'm not sure about the 034s though. I don't think you can change that.

The side adjuster would be nice since I always nick my knuckle adjusting the chain. I bought a longer screw driver and that helps.

Mine is a newer one

Some of the 036/034 had a snap on metal plate. It uses steel fingers that sort of snap on to the bar studs. I'll get a pic when I get home tomorrow.

Not sure about the side adjust conversion

image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg The 036 Pro I just assembled had that. It was pain to get on and off.

I'm sure some resourceful guy on OPE could or has modified this to make it work.

Thanks guys.

SS, my case does not have the hole drilled next to the bar stud, and no place for the side adjustment screw (just a narrow grove from that plug down to the adjustment slot).

No way in the world a side adjuster is going on this saw.

You have a 034WB. They were early 90's. Front adjuster, no guide plates, no air filter pre filter screen in cover and spur sprocket. They were at a cheaper price point. A relative of mine bought one in 91 or 92. It has a ton of hard use and abuse, and very little maintenance. It has needed very little repair over the years.

I think you nailed it, but what does WB stand for?

Here are some pics of the case. Also, this saw has seen some hard use, so I'm using some Loctite PL Premium to repair the cover and build up an eroded portion of the Tank Handle. Never seen anyone use it before, but it is very tough stuff and sticks to everything, so I'm gonna give it a try (also, I had it w/o going to the store). The cover had about a 1/2 hole right at the corner.

Anyone have any good advice on how the get the recoil spring back in place? Got very close, but did not get it, may need another set of hands.

Maybe get a new case half Mike? Get an 036/360 case?

Already put the bearing & seals in it, I'm not taking them out! However, I may change plans if I can find a 036/360 saw, and restore this one as an 034 (the cylinder is good, just needs a piston).

I would really like the ported 036 to have a side chain adjuster.

It's my Plitz tribute saw. lol

Those were gifted to me two Christmases ago and I didn't want to not use them. Currently it has a 24" that is for my ported 036. I will eventually take them and cut them down to a more appropriate size.
