The HF for your machine and mine is for spark initiation. Welders keeps HF on when set to AC because if it was start only (like in DC mode) the arc would go out. In AC, HF continues to re-jump the gap as the wave crosses zero so the arc is stabile. In DC, it’s only needed to initiate the arc.

Turn off your HF and use your hand or foot controll to get going ...... no arc

Has nothing to do with “cleaning action”

Read page 14 of your manual and drop your little’tude a few notches. We help people by providing accurate information in simple ways
It does clean and what you just said is also correct about initiating ark

You’re all over the place bub, now you’re contradicting yourself after getting huffy with me. I’m thinking you might need to come down a few notches, educate yourself and relax

Should you wish to further this discussion, PM me so we can let this thread get back to muffler mods please

You do what works for you as well as everyone else. Nobody is here saying my way is the only way.

On old transformer machines the HF stays on all the time, but it's such an insignificant amount of amps that it's pretty much negligible during welding. On newer inverter machines, they are smart enough to shut it off after the arc is establish.

I've welded chainsaw mufflers with both types and noticed no difference in any cleaning action.

Things that do matter are:
Surface prep, and don't forget your backside!
Minimum amp arc starts, 5 amps is almost too much on the edge of 20g sheet metal.
Proper gas coverage, remember that you probably should be back purging it... but ain't no one got time for that.
Using a gas lens over a collet. Even better are champagne cups or large cups with diffusers.
Pulse... if you have large runs.
Small diameter filler.

Back to it... 572XP muff mod, you can't get any taller than that!
