So dreadful to withstand.....how could anyone consider running a non ported jug. To think we would have learned by now....

That is what is looking like plating peeling off at the edge of the port. To check for sure, use a small pick or screwdriver and see if it flexes when you gently push against the area that looks like a peel.

Could do that.
But being straight and uniform, my guess is that this jug lived its entire life like this

That should clean up nicely. A few light scratches won't hurt it as long as they aren't through the plating. You might lose 5lbs of compression but I doubt you'd even lose that. Give er a light sanding and hit it with some scotch brite. You know the routine.
I think what everyone is seeing at the exhaust port edge is just the factory bevel.
