I'd try selling the damaged half to recoup some of the expenses of the new one.

Someone must have genuine interest in that broken half.

Was the saw in it's original box?
Any additional packing to help secure the saw?
This is why I am weary with any saw shipping.

Yep....original box, with some extra padding, and another layer of cardboard around the outside.

Claimable against the carrier or just too much trouble?

One thing I've learned is that if USPS is the carrier, you're wasting your time trying to get anything. FedEx will honor a claim, USPS will not.

I was actually going to make a thread about this exact issue. I know shipping companies can be rough with things. But it must be a weak spot. There's no way I see as many saws as randy...and I've had at least 3-4 stihls show up broken in the same spot. That damn tab for the oil cap. Last one was a brand new 261. Kinda tempted to just grind/sand it smooth and dab it with some paint. I have the piece that broke off but don't think I can fix it with my mig lol. Just ranting...and trying to get $ out of these shipping companies is a pain in the sack.

Must be the area. I have had no issues filing claims to either ups or usps.
USPS right now is a crap shoot. There is no way I'd mail a saw with them-- getting anything from a claim would be like getting blood out of a turnip. I have several items purchased that are over 7 days out -- tracking basically stopped. The only chainsaw bar I mailed through our local post office neverarrived. The United States Post office has pretty much 0 quality control. If you pay a certain rate they ought to get it there or process a refund -- that will never happen though.

I just got refunded today for shipping cost on something i sent @Stevetheboatguy. He was supposed to receive it Monday by overnight shipping, it just left Chicago this morning. But I'll admit, I put my wife on it and she got the money back. Just straight out luck really.
