Benjamin Franklin wanted to make the U.S. national bird the wild turkey, rather than the bald eagle. Works for me.
There are plenty of both species around here. Wild turkeys are smart, wily, sharp-eyed survivors who can disappear into the woods like ghosts in about half a second flat.
Bald eagles would much rather steal a fish from an osprey than actually go out and catch a fish. Most of the time, I see them eating carrion by the side of the road, or chicken bones discarded in the parking lot of the local Food Lion. Charming birds.
