Guys, picked up a blowed up 359 and am planning on "someday building" it...
question for the Husky guys is why would you 357 a 359 saw or would you convert it at all ?
what are the differences ? other then the XP in the 357 ?

not planning on porting it at this point so....

The 357 XP had crank stuffers, the 359 did not. Also the 357 is a Quad port bottom fed transfers like a 372 or 346, 359 is sort of a "in between" cylinder design. Some guys say unless you are going to add stuffers stick with the 359 top end but I put a 357 top end on a 359 this past spring and it ran really well.

I have piles of both... I still think the 359 bottom with the 357 top has the best torque and works the best for firewood. I just built a ported 359 and it runs well but my old 357 was a bit better. We'll see when this one breaks in.

I should add. A 359 is easy to clean up the ports and make run very well.

Any differences in bearings or crank ?
Most of the quads I've run seemed to be better on fuel

Case volume affecting torque maybe( no stuffers on 359) ?

Is the swap "plug and play" or is it parts chase?

Neil murphy told me the case volume was the factor long ago.

Everything else is identical. You can add stuffers to the 359. Plug and play on everything.... I can get you a deal on a 357 top end new... No more used here...

Plug and play for the cylinder swap, not sure if stuffers will fit on a 359 crank without machining, never tried. Cranks will swap though.

I'll second what the guys above have said- a 359 with stuffers runs good and a 357 without stuffers is a good saw. When the series first came out, I built one of each for myself and then built several of each for a local tree service company. If you're going to do the stuffers in a 359 though, the jug needs quite a bit of work to make a really good runner, whereas the 357 jug doesn't need much when you take the stuffers out.

Might it be safe to say that the 357 with stuffers is a better package for limbing with some bucking?

Ive got a 357xp inroute to me and i have a project 2159. I was going to do the 357xp topend on the 2159. Then see which version I like better.... with stuffers or without lol. I owned a 359 almost 15 years ago. Seemed like a great saw, but i knew very little about saws back then. My dad bought it from Lowes as a reconditioned saw for like $300 lol.

I have never owned a 359 but i believe I remember @Mastermind said a ported 359 was one of most impressive saws he ever ran. If you didn't say that then please correct me Randy.

I think what I really meant (and think I said) was that the 359 gained more from porting than any 60cc saw I'd ever done.

But......they are very impressive.

Seems to me like a 357's power is more 'peaky' where as the 359 has a wider powerband, so it's more user friendly for someone less experienced with running saws. Kinda like comparing an MS440 to a Dolmar 7900... the Dolmar is faster, but you have to use more finesse, whereas any monkey can run a 440. Same with 357 vs. 359, or 346 vs. 353. Or VW vs. Porsche. :)

That's just my opinion and I'm not sure if will make any sense to anyone else?o_O

Makes sense to me Clint.

Same with the 545 vs the 550.

Is it symptomatic of the suffers or the quad ports ..... Or both ?
