These new oregon chains don't leave much meat around the edges. to keep from getting crushed down in the anvil.

Not sure but might try thinning rivet heads with dremmel. Also noticed chain is in 404 groove...

Both those rivets seem wrong..dished/introvert. To the other rivets.

is that the joining link you spun or did someone else do it ?

this morning I reread this thread, I now see it’s the anvil that the problem,

I have one of those anvils that moparmyway linked below. They work ok but it’s still fiddly
